Default Tired of Hurst Ball...time for a change

Hello folks,

I've said enough is enough with the Hurst ball rattle. I'd like to replace the ball mostly due to the slight play it has between the insert and the actual ball. I have the stock C5 shifter (and I'd like to keep it like this for now, no big complaints here), so I'm only interested in replacing the ball. Any recommendations on an aftermarket shifter ****? I'm looking for something maybe a little smaller, less slippery than the Hurst ball ****.

PS: No, my rattle is not the shifter bushings. I recently replaced them with the polyurethane ones from ZipCorvette (they're awesome btw), and shifter works flawless without the shitty Hurst ball.

I went back to the OE **** after tiring of the Hurst rattle. I'm not saying that it's ideal, but at least it doesn't rattle.

Don't understand. I am running a cut down standard shifter with a Hurst cue ball shifter. There is no rattle. Never has been. The Hurst insert has no play between it and the actual ball, because the insert is moulded into the plastic ball.

Please explain.

I couldn't stand the stock shifter **** on the Hurst shifter. It was like shifting a short throw swim noodle. I don't like the size of the Hurst ball so it was never an option for me.

There is a guy on ebay that sells an aluminum size specific (no inserts) shifter ball engraved or not to your specs that is only 2 inches in diameter.

It has been 100% and would absolutely recommend.

I bought a Hurst type shift **** from Twistedshifterz a few years back, never an issue. If you like the Hurst look still maybe try them. I ordered mine with the 9/16 threaded insert epoxied deep into the ball. With that and around 1 1/4" shortened shaft it's been flawless and a much nicer length.

Perhaps the Hurst has an adaptor in the **** to get the proper thread instead of a single threaded insert? That would explain the rattle.
All that said, I am tiring of the cliche white ball. Thinking of a more modern ****, maybe leather... so watching the thread.

according to MGW if you tighten the **** past the end to align it it will cause the rattle, must align where you want it and use the jamb nut to tighten !!!!

I'd rather do what I did than have to use/see a jam nut. Use a bit of non permanent Loctite.

They are not cheap, but check out Raceseng. I just ditched my MGW gripper, and super happy. I went with the sphereology and topology cover as well, they use a system with a weighted core(1 LB) and you can change the outer derlin cover for different shapes. THe thing is a piece of art and made in the USA about 20 minutes from me actually. Incredible quality. If you don't care to wait, they will custom make about anything. They have lots of options.

Alternatively, plumbers' thread sealing vinyl tape does the job.

i wish. The problem is not in the threads, it’s in between the insert and the ball itself. A very slight play, almost imperceptible, is enough to make it rattle like a pair of maracas under WOT.

Im amazed at so many responses from you guys. This forum rocks. I ended up ordering a grippy Delrin one, non-weighted, let’s see how it goes. If I’m not happy I’ll bite the bullet and resort to probably Raceseng or TwistedShifterz later on.

Agree, but I decided to throw the Hurst cue ball in the trash. Not a fan of the glossy slippery surface anyway, and for me 2-1/8” OD was a tad too big. Not worth it for me to experiment trying to take the insert out and re-epoxying it.
