Default 1989 Head Gasket (looking for mechanic in Vancouver)

Hey guys, I have a 1989 6-speed and it looks like it needs a new head gasket. There is no coolant in the oil. The oil is fine, but I do have some bubbles in the radiator and I'm no expert, but a Google search indicates that is exhuast gases getting into the coolant. I took it to a shop. They did a sniff test and said it had a small reading of exhaust fumes in the overflow tank. The car does not overheat, runs well, and runs at normal temp. The coolant light comes on every couple days. I have to add a 1/4 cup of coolant to top off the radiator. No leaks on the ground. I changed the spark plugs and #4's threads looked slightly wet, but I could not tell if it was coolant. One thing I notice is that If the car sits for several days it takes longer to start. I turn the key and it turns over and over, but does not start as if it is not getting gas. Turn a second time same thing. Third time it starts and idles well and it will start on first key turn for the rest of the day no matter how many times I turn car off/on again. I wonder if that's coolant buildup in plug #4 ? Anyway, one shop wants $2500 Canadian ($1900 US) to replace the head gasket. Big sigh. I don't know if that includes resurfacing the head. I have to call them back and ask. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of an honest mechanic in the Vancouver, Canada area. Thank you for any thoughts.

Still looking for an honest mechanic near the Vancouver, Canada area (or a city near Vancouver). Anyone know of one ? :-) Also wondering if anybody has any opinions on using the Fel-Pro Head Gasket Sets HS7733PT-9 for a 1989 corvette. Thank you.

Call Gary at Classic & Performance Cars in Delta. They are corvette specialists. Not cheap, but they know what they are doing.

Quick update for Canadians in the lower mainland of British Columbia. I found a mechanic in Langley, Canada who fixed my head gasket for a reasonable price. The mechanic is Terry at Kershaw Performance Engines Ltd in Langley, BC. He works on engines only. You can read the story at the link below. Hope this helps.
