To buy or not buy with A8?
Greetings,
Ive enjoyed reading all of the outstanding comments, information, and opinions on this forum. My compliments to all. My retirement gift is hopefully a 2017 C 7 Stingray which I need to pull the trigger on in the next 72 hours. All was great and on track until yesterday when I began to read the nearly 40 page Sticky on the A 8 transmission issues. The mint condition, clean CarFax, 5,000 mile C 7 I found appears perfect, but there are some pretty ominous writings about A 8 issues. Should I be swayed by bad A 8 reviews and excellent documentation on this forum? Other than this forum and three bloggers I found zero information from anyone on this issue (such as car review magazines, consumer reporting/complaints).
Thanks in advance

You have nothing to worry about
before you sign the papers tell them you want the triple flush completed on the transmission and you should have no issues
even if you did down the road? you're covered for 5 years.
you'll be fine
it's the fluid viscosity it's been discussed Forever on here since they made the change
the original fluid was too thick causing the shudder
I had both my vehicles done my ZO6 got the triple flush and my Sierra ended up getting the triple flush and a new converter.

And then buy the Range device. Plug it in and forget about it. And no, it does not void the warranty.

I’m personally an M7 guy. However if I chose an auto I wouldn’t worry about it. GM sells a lot of these cars. Overall the auto is okay on the street. I wouldn’t track one though as they don’t have the same cooling. My neighbor owns a nice Stingray with an auto and hasn’t had any issues. Enjoy the car as it’s going to make a great gift to yourself.

Here's the link for the Range disabler. You won't regret this purchase. The cars runs much better when the engine can't get into the V4 mode. Myself, and many others will verify that.

thank you. I’m getting a 2014 Z51 and dealer has no clue if this was done since he got car from auction. Should I drive it and see if i feel the shiudder or should I just go ahead and do this?

You would be crazy to buy an A8. You will very likely regret it.

Remember what you read on the forums are a few b!tchy owners...
There are thousands of owners who, I am sure are very happy with the whole car.
Most A8 are not as bad as some want you to think. Some of these guys drive their keyboard more than their car.
I am almost to 60K miles on a 2015. I am happy overall with my A8.
It has been problematic, but my dealer has made it right.

We now have 20k miles on our 2017 Z51 A8. If it wasn't for the problems people discussed here, I'd think it was the best automatic I've ever owned. Actually, I still do.
The triple flush is gone, latest version of the bulletin is a single flush and blow out the cooler lines, refill with new "Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF Dexron HP" trans fluid.
If the car you buy has the Mag Ride option and is coming from a dealer, be sure to have them install the mag ride update which reprograms the computer controlling the shocks and rides much nicer but still handles well. $350 list price.

Before the fix was found which is quite amazing that the fluid just needed tweaking (and according to a Corvette engineer is common during the life cycle of any automotive part needing lubrication)
the A8 is an amazing trans. Perfect amount of gears.

I had problems with my 2015 Stingray A8. When I passed someone in the automatic mode it would downshift a couple of gears. The problem was it would not automatically upshift. I learned I had to pull over and turn the engine off and restart it. Just like rebooting. I have had no problems with my 2018 Z06 A8

It's an electro-mechanical machine (that can be) exposed to the worst elements the planet produces - dust, dust storms, heat, cold, rain, flooded streets, hail, snow, sleet, ice, and all this while waiting in traffic gridlock. It was made by humans, on an assembly line, using outsourced parts from the cheapest bidder. And the famous bell curve for production tolerances means 5% are tolerance problematic requiring remediation, 90% are tolerance acceptable, and 5% are absolutely perfect. Even when found to be one of the low end 5% models, Even when driven through all the above, Even when driven at high speeds on a race track; CHEVY STANDS BEHIND EACH AND EVERY C7 PRODUCED WITH A 3yr/36K mileage bumper to bumper warranty!
And so you buy one knowing you have a great initial warranty, can buy an extended GM-sponsored BTB warranty for up to an additional 6 years and your choice of additional mileages, and there are 3000 Chevy dealers in the US alone that can fix it, with roadside assistance to get it to a dealership from where ever you care to drive.
Or not. If the car scares you, don't buy it. But if you DO find that perfect car in this imperfect world, please let us know!
