Default Small fiber plug in taillight assembly

I pulled the taillights from my '64 as part of prep for eventual repaint. Was pleased to see previous owner had apparently just replaced them, as they were like brand new. As I removed the lens for cleaning, each one had a small fiber-like piece of material which seemed to be in the drain holes. I don't have my camera handy - one per assembly, tan, roughly 1/4" square by 1/2" long.

My question is were these pieces intended to stay in there and keep rain, spiders etc out, or were they something which should be removed to allow moisture to get out?

Thanks!

They are supposed to stay in there.
You will loose judging points if they are missing

Thanks Rich! I won't be having the car judged but good to know they have a purpose. Already lost one last summer, pulled one lens off to replace a bulb and didn't even know the thing was there. It has long since vanished up the shop vac or dustpan but I may pick up a new set of those for when it finally hits the road anyway.

They are absorbent cotton and I think the idea is that they will 'wick' moisture out of the tail light into the atmosphere...but I could be full of it...but yeah, they are supposed to be there.

Frankie,
That's exactly what they're there for.

Go bum a cigarette, take the filter and make a few the correct size.

Yes, better than just an open 'weep hole' where bugs and crap can migrate into the tail light...
Sort of a tail light Tampon...

In addition, they are "air filters" that keep dirt out of the interior of the lamp housings as they "breathe" with changes in air pressure.

The "sealed" LED tail lights will not have these wicks for those that care about such things BTW...

Also allows expanding air from the heat of the bulb to exit and then allows air to be drawn back in as it cools down without sucking in things like bugs and water and dust.
