Default 74 Coupe, loose wire from wiper/washer connector



1974 Coupe: Can anyone please help me determine the proper location this gray wire should terminate? I am unable to determine where it goes with the wiring diagram, probably overlooking it. It’s currently just laying inside the engine compartment, clearly it’s been removed from a connector somewhere. The wire originates from the terminal and is connected to the yellow wire. The wire has power when the ignition switch is on.

That does not look to be wired correctly.
The WIPER MOTOR has a SINGLE terminal on the case which is the (black) GROUND wire.
That BLACK wire runs from the wiper motor to the fan motor and ends up connected to a starter or bell housing bolt.
Also, the switch gets its ground from being mounted to the center console.

There is a single black wire grounded to a ground terminal. The wire in question comes from the terminal marked 3, along with the yellow wire.

If the extra wire goes from ground to 12 volts the fuse would blow or worst yet the wire would melt.
Do your wiper work?

Peterbuilt, The wipers work.
Obviously, if the hot wire touches a ground there will be a significant event.It’s unbelievable that there has not been a major meltdown to this point, just dumb luck on the PO’s part I suppose.
I am attempting to determine what the wire was intended to power. The gray wire in question has switched power, that is to say, ignition switch on equals 12v to the wire in question. It certainly appears to me to be a factory connection with the yellow wire.

Upon further inspection, my motor and wiring setup is like the diagram posted above with the exception of the wire in question that is coupled with the yellow wire.

For further clarification on the wiper wires.
Single connector, connected to ground lug (Black)
Main Connector, top to Bottom:
Blue (looks green, probably faded after 45 years)
Yellow and Gray (Gray is wire in question)
Black

Hey Eddy-

More than likely somebody at one time used that to power an electric choke..as that's a switched ignition power source AND it looks a lot like the wire Holley uses (see below)...

I pull apart the wiper switch plug- remove the wire and toss it in the trash...UNLESS you have an electric choke and it's not hooked up!!!

I believed you have nailed it. I knew that I couldn't find it on the wiring diagram and with good reason.That connector pictured is the same as my rouge wire too. I really appreciate your help sir. Good luck with the steering rack engineering.

Richard was spot on with my wire issue. I popped the terminal from the connector when I got home from work this evening, sure enough you can see where someone pried the terminal open to insert the choke wire.
