Muncie VIN stamp

Muncie VIN stamp
I would like to see if anyone has ever seen a Muncie VIN stamp with another feint stamp above it (see photo)
I erased the last three digits of the stamping as I am looking at buying a 1969 Corvette 427/435hp car but do not want to cause a controversy. I have seen MANY double stamps, but never one quite like this. The number above the stamp appears to be the same numbers, but it is hard to tell.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

The aluminum on that trans shows a lot of corrosion and pitting. And there is no corrosion or pitting inside the numbers on that new stamp. It looks too good. I bet it's a restamp. Do you see the way the pits are in and obscure the upper numbers?

hard to restamp a tranny case, especially aluminum.. grind off old numbers and stamp new numbers on the surface? can't be done and keep same surface texture.
what folks do is buy a blank case and then stamp the numbers on them as an original stamp. then you gotta look at case numbers and casting dates.
if you are looking at a expensive 435, check everything ( engine too) for dates lining up and well as any stamping excuses. deduct from the price accordingly.

I see what you're asking RHCH. It's clearly been re-stamped, but with the same number. Is this a problem?
It would not be for me but if you're going in for top flight judging it might me an issue for someone else.
I think if they were going to fake it, they would have done a better job of obscuring the old number.

Curious as to why this could not have been a bounce of the gang stamp?
Texture matches.
Or maybe somebody thought the original stamp was getting corroded off and merely restamped it so that it could be identified for theft, etc.
Who knows, 50 years is a longtime. Stuff happens? If somebody had intended to misrepresent originality, IMHO, this would not be what you see here.
Let us know what you conclude, interesting.
Or maybe Derek is right, no corrosion in the valleys of the highly defined numbers so this was done later??

If a "double" stamp; doesn't the 2 in the faint stamps look like a different font to the 2 in the heavy stamp?
One of the ways stamps are verified by the experts is to compare the fonts with other known good stamps built around the same time.

Given it is a 1969 Corvette 427/435hp car I would not trust any date stamp on the car without solid proof and documentation. That stamp looks questionable to me.

Format is suspicious. There should be a 1 in front of the 9.

I think it is a legit restamp for clarity. Check engine block stamp.
