Default Torque tube bearing c5

I bought a used 2004 Vette and noticed a slight rattling noise when I turn off the ignition for a few seconds.it only occurs occasionally.the dealer said it was the torque tube bearing. He can fix it or let it go until it fails. Does anyone have advise for this.

Assuming this car is a manual transmission, first thing we all need to know is next time you turn off the car, leave the clutch in, if the rattle stops, that is normal for c5's. How many miles on the car?

Default Rattle

I noticed it did not rattle with the clutch in. My car has 40,428 miles. Dealer is offering to fix for free or give me $1,500 in compensation.

Agreed, those bushings should be good for 100k at least on a stock car.

I have mine apart now, changing them. Mine are shot at 80k miles. However, I don't think that is the OP's problem....if it only rattles with the clutch disengaged.

Good news/bad news, I guess? There's nothing to fix; this noise is normal and doesn't indicate anything wrong with the car. With your foot off the clutch pedal, the torque tube is spinning at the same speed as the engine. If you stop the engine, that long aluminum tube has to jerk to a stop with it, and the whole assembly will slap back and forth. Always push in the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch before shutting the engine off. You won't hear the noise, and it's easier on the drivetrain. The dealer or service department must not be very experienced with Corvettes; it's good of them to offer you $1,500, but it would be dishonest to take it since the car is not broken. There is nothing they can fix or replace that will make the noise stop happening. Just drive the car, enjoy, and remember to push in the clutch pedal before you shut it off

I echo the posts above; It's normal for manual transmission C5s and a lot of them do this including mine. Just remember to hold clutch in when turning off the car.

If dealer is offering you $1,500 in good faith compensation you can take it and run or in good morals turn it down and know nothing is wrong with your car.

The only time you'll have to start worrying about torque tube bearings is if you start getting closer to six digit mileage or you start adding HP.

Was it ever published by GM, maybe in one of the later-years' owners' manuals or a TSB or something? I checked the owner's manual for my 1999 and was surprised to find that it doesn't say anything about it.

NEVER published in an owners manual or the service manual. Cant tell ya about a TSB.

All I know is, it did it on my 98, and 02 ZO6 and ANY other C5 that I have ever worked on.. If you shut it down with the trans in N and clutch released, it will RATTLE when the engine spins down to a stop. With the clutch DEPRESSED, its quiet as a church mouse.
