Default New from Fort Worth

Howdy Folks.

I am not yet an owner. Looks like a C5 (97 - 00) will hit the spot, both in what I like and what falls in the budget. Also looks like something with 50K miles or a bit less will be budget friendly too. I am looking for a convertible, some shade of Red and a 6 speed manual. The 6 speed is non-negotiable but if the right car comes along, I could happily live with Black or Pewter and a coupe in one of those colors. I have driven one so far that was for sale. 99 Magnetic Red Convertible. Nice solid car and decent price. My problem was it was the first C5 I have ever driven, so I had nothing to compare it too. I did make a ridiculous offer as they pressed a bit, which as I expected was declined. I was fine with that. At this point. I think I have 5 or 6 or more test drives before I know what is good and what isn't. During that time, I can also figure out if I need a few more bucks, to change year and/or mileage to find the car I want. The thought of driving another handful or more Corvettes.... well it doesn't make me sad..... Going to be a fun fall and winter in Texas..... if it ever stops raining!

I hope to get some info here that will help me. Having folks who know these cars and being able to ask questions will be invaluable, I thank you in advance and apologize for my ignorance.

Randy....

Randy - welcome to the forum and best of luck in your search for a nice C5. My advice is to be patient and test drive a number of cars - you’ll find the right one.

Also, read the stickies at the top of the page, especially the ones on buying a Vette and the definitive info thread and also look in the C5 Tech section for more helpful stickies.

I, too, would encourage you to take your time and figure out what you like. And the farther you're willing to travel, the more choices you'll have. I spent several months researching and shopping, and enjoyed every minute of it. I've heard of other folks who spent years doing the same thing!

Welcome to the forum, Randy!
As others have said, there's a lot of great info in the Stickies as well as the General and Tech sections that should help you be better prepared to judge whether a particular C5 is right for you.
Remember to check the "Corvettes For Sale" area of the C5 section, too.
Best wishes with your search!

Thanks for the welcome folks and the advice.

I am in no hurry this time. The last time I hurried I ended up with a 78 MGB. It was a good driver, hot as hell inside and looks wise.... a 25 footer at best. Mostly what is was...... was a mistake and disappointment. I had a 72 in my younger days..... proving that memories tend to be much better than reality :-). My wife found it too hot to ride in and of course no A/C and a steady stream of hot air from the engine compartment made it a sauna on wheels.... and a very slow sauna at that. Took a bath on it when I sold it 3 years and 1200 miles later,,,,,.

This time, something much more modern, much more reliable, much more fun, much more American and A/C,,,,, sweet A/C! That and the fact that Corvettes are just cool...... never heard one called cute....and I doubt anyone will look at the Vette and ask, "What is that"...... My response after a while was "It's a bad idea, wanna buy it?".

Why don't the English make computers?

They couldn't figure out how to make them leak oil.....
