Default Instrument Cluster Switching MPH to KM/H

Anybody dealt with the problem when the instrument cluster switches back and forth, on its own, between mph and km/h? When it switches to metric my auto temp control changes to Celsius from Fahrenheit too. I've been told it's probably a ground problem, the whole cluster assembly needs to be replaced, or it's the the DIC module needing to be changed. My car is a '98 w/58,000 miles and no HUD. Open to recommendations

Safe to assume you played with the button a bit to ensure it's not sticking?

Yes, sometimes the E/M button responds and changes it back. Sometimes it does nothing at all. I pulled the instrument cluster and disconnected the plug in the back. I sprayed it with electrical connection cleaner and hit it with compressed air. That didn't help either.

Don't know if they are still available new but, see if you can get an new right hand button set.

If you cant get it NEW, contact VETTENUTS and see if he has a good used assy.

That should resolve the issue.

There really isn't any grounds (so to speak) that would cause that. There is a reff voltage 5 VDC to the button assy and a internal module ground wire (grey wire). IF, all the other buttons are working, it most likely that the rubber switch button BUBBLE is deformed and makes intermittent contact with dash vibrations.

I'd first disconnect the buttons for a while and see if the problem stops. If it still does it with them disconnected then you know that changing the buttons won't help.

Did this on a buddy's 99 coupe. Had to replace the IPC. The buttons were not the problem.
On his I don't remember if the other buttons still worked.

The thing that still confuses me is that instrument cluster seems to display the correct information, although it's bouncing back and forth from mph to km/h. It's like the commands being sent to it are screwed up, but it will display what it is told to do. The tach and all other gauges, oil pressure, temperature, fuel level, etc., never deviate from normal. Remember, the auto temp control displays Fahrenheit or Celsius in the same pattern and that display is not in the cluster. Not being an electronics wiz, I don't understand how the problem could be anything other than the DIC. I do appreciate all the guidance though.

I would try to rule this out first.

If you do as Lionelhutz suggested in post #5 you will have your answer.

I have had the same problem. Now DIC is completely dead, do not know what to do.
