Totally a personal decision --- there is no universal right or wrong in this choice. It is all about what makes you feel better in your individual situation.
Some people like the OnStar functions and some think they are totally unnecessary.
Some people like the factory Nav and some prefer their cell phone maps.
Some people buy all the insurance they can and some people think it is a waste of money.
Some people buy extended warranties and others are quite comfortable without a warranty.
Some people like chrome wheels while others like black/painted wheels.
None of these are universally right or wrong (with the exception of the 'chrome wheels' thing...I just threw that in to seem more open-minded)
FYI -- I like the lower-tier of the OnStar services... worth a few bucks a month to me. I have no use for the turn-by-turn or concierge services, so I don't buy them.

Kent1999 summed it up well. I've had OnStar for many years on all the GM vehicles I've owned, and to me, it's just another insurance policy. The main things being that should things go wrong (i.e., accident, car-jacking, mechanical failure, etc.), the necessary notifications are made for you or it's just a button-push away to ask for the assistance you need. No fumbling for the cellphone then trying to figure out what number(s) to call, etc, etc; you're paying for someone else that does this all day to do that part of it for you.

Who knows what your needs are. For me, though, it was a total and complete waste. ENJOY your new Vette, in any event!!!

As mentioned earlier, you'll get it free for 3 months. Use it and decide for yourself.
You'll also get XM/Sirius for a year. Same there - use it and decide what you want to do after that. Note that if you extend you will usually be able to get them to offer discounted rates by phone.

If the dealer "activates" OnStar, I don't believe it can be "de-activated". You can tell OnStar to stop using or storing the data the receive from your car, but AFAIK they still get it.
I don't trust OnStar to honor my wishes, they've already been caught once using data from inactive accounts.

I only use it when I take the car on a long road trip, then cancel it. Around town, and short trips I say no. Plus, the car isn't a daily driver, and I can't see paying for OnStar while the car is in the garage. But, that's just me. As stated above, you get 3 or 6 months free ( can't remember which). Give 'er a try, then make your decision.

To comment on the OP's question...not sure I will keep OnStar or not. I surely would if they offered their Security option as a standalone option but as it is now, you have to subscribe to another option as well--running the cost to $25 a month.

In 2018, if you don't have complete connectivity, you're not living in the present. It's like not having a phone. Lol! My brand spanking new 2017 C7 Stingray 3LT, came with the factory upgraded 12-months complete package. Once you have it, you won't have a car without it! I just LOVE it!!

If you want them to leave you alone decline the privacy agreement. They are probably still collecting data. I have had a winter project to disable the hardware that I've never gotten around to doing - because they have left me alone. Others have reported they will start talking to try to sell their product an surprising times but I haven't encountered that issue with no privacy agreement.

You get it 3 months free if you give them your credit card number. One month free if you don't give them the credit card number. I took the one month and let it lapse. I've heard of people on here having problems cancelling after giving onstar their credit card number. As others have said, use it for the free period and if you decide it is worthwhile to YOU then buy it.

I get the Safe and Sound Plan for $159.99 per year. That includes accident notification, free road service, an insurance discount for low mile vehicles (mileage data only sent to my insurer). I have it on all 3 of my vehicles. The accident notification is the main reason I carry it. As an example watch the last 30 seconds of this video:
I didn't need them to notify the authorities since I was at VIR with its own emergency crews but they were there. I have a 10 second memory gap from the impact to the OnStar guy telling me his name. When you have an incident as violent happen on the road it is nice to know somebody is watching and able to send for help.
