Default License plate cover round... 2?

There was a post a while ago asking who used a front plate where dictated by law. I was one who was using a cover and taking my chances, until yesterday that is.

Well, the police were doing insurance and license plate checks on my route home from work. I got a warning only, next time is a fine. How much you may ask? $220 clams!!
Today was garbage day...

Running the plate is certainly better than paying $220. It's why I run my plate - not worth the potential hassle.

FWIW...MT is a front plate state. I run my plate with a smoke plate cover and a clear cover over it.

Hmm is that a translucent smoke cover? Could be worthwhile to see if there’s a way to install LEDs inside of it to illuminate the plate from within the cover..

cake and eat it too?

thank god I keep my car registered in Ga. no front plates to deal with.

It's bad enough to have a front plate but NY has the ugliest plate in the country, only looks ok on a school bus.

On par with "stop and frisk" out there in NY. I like Giuliani for some things....that certainly was not one of them. Glad it was overturned. I worked for PD for several years...policies like that...would NOT be a good thing in the hands of the guys I knew working the job. HELLLLLL NO....

Whatever you do, don't throw it away. It's worth at least a good penny or 3,500 of them

Having insurance is the law; you can't drive your car without it. So I get it TBH.

It's the law here too, but it doesn't mean we have to go off all peoples republic about it. That's ridiculous IMO.

IIRC it was $35 new. Used maybe $20, then I gotta deal with selling a spray bombed unit, and spending time packaging. Maybe hasty, but it was trash day...

Having insurance is the law, but stopping people to check for it, in the US, requires probable cause or reasonable suspicion as defined by Terry V. Ohio. In the US it is illegal to stop and check for, what is assumed to be in place. So, to the comment above that says it's "legal here" too...is incorrect. Insurance is required in many states but the ability to stop and check for it, at random, is absolutely illegal under our Constitution. I worked several years for PD in PA, so it's not a debatable issue. Do many officers breach civil rights, yes, absolutely. Have police in this country run random stop and checks..yes, but those were overturned at court. NYC "stop and frisk" under Giuliani is an on par example of why we don't allow "random checks for legality". Those policies tend to make police gravitate to low income areas, high crime areas and disproportionately targeted minority communities. It's illegal in the US.

When you're born and raised in a society that deems that acceptable, it's natural that you'd "understand" and support it. People in countries support mercy killings because it's what they're taught. Doesn't make it humane or "fair" in the grand scheme.

Hey K.I.T.T., let's take a step back. It's mandatory to insure your vehicle here. It's also mandatory to have an unobscured plate rear and front. The rear plate includes expiration of the insurance.
So nobody was getting pulled over without cause in my case. It was no front plate (a Hellcat got pulled over same reason and time), or expired insurance decals.

You clearly made it sound like there was a checkpoint. If not then I apologize for misunderstanding.

I don't see it being clear that there was an invasive inspection. There was a plate (visual front and rear) and insurance check (visual rear). I will try and be 100% on similar posts in the future however...
