What engine is this air cleaner base for? It wont fit my L79 350HP small block. The air horn hole is the correct diameter but the notches at the front of the cleaner base won't allow it to set flat on the air horn base. The crank case vent tube doesn't line up either.

What engine is this for?

Thanks Phil

I can't help with what year that one is for, but my 65 2818 Holley L79 uses a chrome base with square holes around the whole back half of it.

What carb air horn diameter is it for, i.e., Holley 4150, AFB, Quadrajet?

What is the drop from the air horn flange to bottom of the cartridge well?

What is the O.D. of the air filter element?

You might be able to cross-reference the above using an air filter manufacturer's info, then bounce it against carb use types.

Answer Easy Rhino's question. What carburetor are you running? Stock carb was a Holley model 4160 List 3810. If you're not running the stock carb, that is probably why the base is not setting properly.

Looking at your avatar the picture appears to be a '65 interior. If you have a '65 and have a stock Holley for the L79 which would be list# 2818 the choke is different than the '66 and '67 Holley carbs. The '65 L79 carb uses vacuum from the ex. manifold. The '66-'67 carbs do not. Thus the air cleaner will not work for a '65. As earlier mentioned the '65 has a completely different looking, chrome, air cleaner.

Those notches fit in the front of a Holley 4150 to ensure the base is oriented properly.

Notice the notches just in front of the choke air horn.

GM made a LOT of different carb bases for all of their cars. It may not be Corvette at all. My guess would be that it is possibly for passenger car. It also could be for a later model car that used a Rochester carb. I just looked at all of the bases Corvette Central sells (they have pretty good pictures and you can hoover over them to enlarge) and could not find any that have the crank case vent tube oriented in that position. The fact that the notches don't line up would point to it being for a Carter carb and I THINK the only C2s that used one were the 250 and 300 h.p. cars and they had a twin snorkel air cleaner base.

340 hp cars used the Carter AFB, as well.
