Emissions Recall & California Facts
I’m considering a move to California but my car has an open emissions recall. My car is a Callaway, supercharged, tuned, exhaust, etc so I’m not having a dealer start monkeying around with it.
I’ve read stories in other threads that CA won’t let you renew your registration until you’ve had the recall performed. Is that true in all cases or was someone forced into it by a dealer?
Hypothetically, will any 2008-09 pass smog without the recall done?

I have no idea whether your car would pass a California emissions test with those mods ( maybe Calloway can help?) As far as the recall is concerned that applies to adding 2 more cats to the factory 2 cats that came with the car for a total of 4. If you have headers on your car, it will not pass a emissions visual inspection in Ca

^ Yeah, I thought about editing my post. I meant would any 2008-09 C6 pass without the recall done.
IIRC Callaways are 50 state legal, so before CA changed the rules I’m confident it would have passed.

They don't check for recalls. That's not part of their checklist. Cars 2000 and newer are only subject to visual inspections (popping the hood and looking underneath for cats) and they plug a obd2 scanner to make sure there are no codes and the emissions test comes out as "ready" on the scanner.

You do not have to have all recalls done (I have never done the headlight recall and just passed inspection) but that emissions recall for the cats must be completed to pass.
If your exhaust has been modified from the engine to the cats (headers for example) , you will fail the inspection. Cats back exhaust is ok.

Thanks for the replies. Another strike against moving I guess.

I'd really like to get the F out of here, but I'm not willing to switch careers at my age.

I was expecting this, and it's okay. Short answer is I can probably move to three places, So Cal, Southern AZ, South TX. Arizona is too hot, Texas is too hot and I hate it, and California is what it is. "Most are leaving" isn't affecting the population or home prices negatively, so I don't have an answer for that.

It does get warm once in a while in RB but nothing near Texas, Nev. or Az. warm. And housing is more reasonable than in Encinitas or Lecadia. Good luck!
