Default C2 Cup Wheels

I really want a set of chrome Cup wheels for my 427 Vert. But I just read a magazine article, Motor Trend I believe, where the long term C7 Grandsport with 40,000 miles had all of the wheels bent out of round. Is there a weakness with these wheels? I sure like the look.

I've seen threads complaining about weak C7Z wheels. The Cup wheels shown are from the C6Z/GS and have not heard about issues. They are on my short list when I upgrade wheels next spring.

Have heard of issues with both the Cup wheels and C7Z wheels. Just a byproduct of short stiff sidewalls on those tires.

I wouldn't pay for C7 wheels. If someone wanted to give me a set I might take them, but otherwise they appear to be boat anchors.

Friend is on his 3rd set of c7z wheels. Tons of issues with them cracking. I would avoid them if possible.

I have about 6k miles on my Cup wheels and have had no issues. However, I have a friend with a C7Z and he had three bent wheels and one cracked when he had the shop check them last week. Luckily he had bought the wheel protection package so he got reimbursed for a new wheel and the straightening of the other 3.

I wonder if the problem is isolated to just the C7?

I was going to insist on factory oem wheels, but maybe the reproduction cup wheels is the way to go. I cannot believe GM is still having supplier quality issues. Now the wheel problem is noted in a major magazine road test.

I'm not sure, but there are certainly more C7s with the 19/20 combo than any other generation so more likely to have issues. And who knows if GM switched suppliers and the quality is not the same as the C6 Cup wheels.

Its the rubber band sidewalls!!!

Only good to look at - not to drive on.

I think the rubber band thing is a factor, but this is far too broad to be just that. There are guys out there that have warrantied 5 sets which is crazy.

Blaiming it on the rubber band sidewalls is a bit short sided, since there are TONS of good rims that hold up just fine with those tires/sidewalls. The rims simply are not built strong enough for the tires and application.

Sure - you certainly are not wrong. BMW and other german cars also have this issue and ofcourse have the rubber band sidewall specs.

It is difficult to build a rim strong enough (while remaining light) to handle the impacts of city driving when you are running without the help of sidewall damping.

Which rims are running without issue as an apples to apples? I am curious myself.

IMO it's a combination of the short sidewalls, RF tires and cast wheels. The sidewalls on the RF tires flex even less so more of the impact is transferred to the wheel. I didn't notice much of a ride difference going from the original 18/19 GS wheels to the 19/20 Cup wheels. That alone speaks to how little flex there is in the tire sidewall. And you have to remember that these wheels are not forged, but cast because of the price point that GM wants/needs to pay for them. If they were forged I'm sure the additional strength of a forged wheel would help in this case.

Any decent quality wheel. Forgeline, BBS, etc etc. If GM can't design a wheel to use that tire and conditions, then they should pick a different tire, or spend the extra $50 on a forged wheel or design the wheel for heavier loads with a higher quality material or thicker walls. This is a simple design issue.

Agreed. But good luck making gm spend 50 bucks. Pretty sad to be honest.

As a Bmw technician, bmw wheels aren’t built cheaply. They are simply designed to be the weak part of the suspension. Thus making sure that when hitting a big pot hole or similar the suspension is not taking damage. The wheel and tire is and the cars are designed as such.
