Default 17” Wheel Opinion

I’ve rebuilt and upgraded my suspension, but my tires are nine years old even though they look new with less than 10k miles on them. In testing my new suspension set up yesterday, I was both incredibly impressed with the suspension and scared to death of the tires! I plan on upgrading to 17” and need to pull the trigger on new rims (currently 215/70-15 on 15 x 6 rims).

i used the configurator on the American Racing site and narrowed it down to two styles. What do you think?

Currently American Racing 15 x 6 with 215/70-15

Same wheel in 17 x 7 with 225/50-17

Mag Gray w/polished lip in 17 x 7 with 225/50-17

Your current wheel look great and the 17" size will look better. The Mag Gray wheel looks like it hardly has any dish. My $0.02.

Yeah, that is one of my concerns with that wheel given how the center pushes out. Are you still running 245/45-17’s on 7” rims on your car?

I used the same thing Mark. I like the second picture of three. Any particular reason on the 225’s? I’ve been reading all the tire threads and still looking to see if a 245 would look better on an 8” rim on the rear and would it fit without an offset trailing arm after moving the brake cable. If it will work I plan on going staggered.

Good looking car Reno. What color is that?

Which specific American Racing torque thrust wheels are you looking at and has your car been converted to disc brakes front and back?

17 x 8 Team III, LT III wheels. Of course not fit problems with flares. But I just like the 8 spoke oner the 5 spoke.

We are on the same line of thinking, Chris, I just didn’t want to introduce another debate topic when I was focused on rim selection. I made a cross-section of a 245/45-17 tire and I have a 17 x 7 rim to use as a tester. I will need to test all four wheels given how lopsided these cars can be. My other issue is I plan on retaining the drum brakes in the rear. That means each side is 3/4” further inboard than disc brake cars and I have no e-brake cable bracket to mess with. I’m a little concerned about clearance with my rear sway bar and potentially the spring. Up front, all bets are off until I cycle the wheels through the turning radius and check all clearances.

This cross-section template is the dimensions of a 245/45-17 with a tread width of 8.2” and a section width of 9.6”. This particular tire will fit on a 7” wide rim.

I know, kind of looks like a hot wheels Corvette. Some of that is their simulator and flat color, but that’s also why I’m leaning towards the torque thrust wheel which doesn’t look as cartoonish to me.

Same Torque Thrust that are on there now only in 17”. I have power disc up front and original drums in the rear.

I’m not a big torque thrust fan but I’m in the minority...

These were my alternatives both 17x7 with 225/50/17 tires.

Mark, I'd personally go 17x7 with 4 inch back space at all 4 corners. 225/50/17 Nitto NT555 G2's all around. Depending on how the rears sit in the wheel well, I'd consider a 3/4 inch spacer to move them a bit outboard if they appear sunk in. That will also account for a future disc brake change if you ever decide to go that direction. Regardless of which of the above styles you go with, I'd recommend PS Vintage Wheels http://www.psvintagewheels.com/products.html (they have both styles you posted above). They're a little more spendy than AR, but make a high quality wheel, and you can spec a backspacing down to 1/4 inch (potentially 3.5 in the rear if you don't want to entertain a spacer). I plan on running their T/A-1s in 15x7 with 4.25 backspace and 225/60/15 tires.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!!

I like just about any of the old school wheels with "as cast gray" centers on a C2. IMCO it takes the emphasis off the larger diameter and keeps the focus on the style of the wheel.
I don't think you can go wrong with TTIIs, 200S, or Salt Flats for that matter.

I'm going with the first ones, if you look one to the other they show and balance better with the color of the car. The second ones are a touch drab in comparison.
