Surging z06
I purchased a 2006 z06 with Texas speed heads and stage 3 cam. Kooks headers and off road x pipe. The car has been tuned three times and still has a surge under 2500 rpms. I keep hearing it’s all in the tune but I’m starting to think it’s the cam. Don’t understand why Texas speed sells a cam for the street that is not driver friendly. It should be listed for race only. I’m looking to switch for a BTR 3. These guys know how to make a street cam. I’m not a fan of Texas speed right now

Bring your car to Stephen Shoaf at https://www.facebook.com/sslsxtuning/ in Concord, NC and he will get it to drive as good as possible. Probably about 2 hours from you.

Are you considering a switch based on brand? You need to understand specs before deciding and certaining do not overcam. Based on specs, you should consider the btr2, not the 3

Nothing wrong with the cam, TSP can custom grind a top-quality camshaft to nearly whatever duration and lobe slope angle that you want, on one of two different lobes for the 1.8 rocker arms on the LS7. Not sure if you cam may be Gen 1 or 2, but for the 2nd gen LS7 stage 3 cam, they say right on their website that the power band is 2800-6900 rpm. With 240/252 on a 111 LSA, that's 24° of overlap - you're only going to be able tune that to a certain degree. Unnecessairly obtrusive cams like these and aftermarket long-tube headers lower the value of the vehicle, IMO.

Surging as high as 2500 rpm would suggest, at least to me, that its either a tuning issue, or something else mechanically isn't quite right. Out of curiosity, what CAI are you running?

I am running a 22 degree overlap that Stephen tuned and it drives fantastic. However, there are a few mods that I have done that I believe help the drivability. I am running a different 5th and 6th gear which causes the rpms to run a tad higher, E85 also helps and 2" headers may also impact how it drives. Of course in parking lots it bucks and surges like any big cam, but it will cruise in 6th gear at 60mph with no surging or bucking.

I was having the same issue with a BTR stage III cam where I was getting lots of surging. I got a re-tune done by PCM of NC and they solved all my driveability issues. Sucks that I had to spend another $500+, but it was so worth it and makes the car so much more fun to drive. Power also is more linear than before as well.
If you don't mind private message me to whom your tuner is currently. On another note it took me nearly 4 months to get an appointment with PCM of NC as they are so damn busy.

Patrick Guerra will work with you remotely; you won't find a better tuner.

More than likely need to smooth the timing around the cruise area and either add or remove timing based on what your car wants. Mine responded well to near stock timing where other people take 15deg out to load the motor up.

The latest update on the surging. I had another guy do a road tune instead of the Dyno. Was suppose to help with drivability. Still no difference. I have an appointment with Steven mid March for a cam change. Going with the BTR2. I’ve been running down suggestions for the cause like vacuum leaks. I have 11” of vacuum at 1000 rpms cold. Seems low but it might be normal with a big cam. If it was spark I’m sure it would cause a code. Any other suggestion before I spend the money for a cam change. Thanks for your help.

Almost positive the issues you're having is not enough or turbulent airflow over the MAF. I'd try a different air filter setup as a quick test, or if you have a honeycomb straightener try putting it in front of the MAF to smooth the airflow and see if the MAF likes that better. If you search for surging here you'll find that a lot of itmes that is caused by cutting the radiator shroud, but it can also be the shape of the air housing and MAF location. There really is no straight line for air to to get headed in a straight shot before the MAF on that intake.
