Lazy question about coupe top creak/pop
Yes, I own it. I could look up old threads, but I'd rather converse with you, and get the latest up to date info on the bestest fix.
The new to me '08 is now popping and crackling like a bowl of Rice Crispy. What's the best way to silence it? I never really paid attention to those threads, because they didn't apply to me (FRC and Vert until now) and I had no help for the others. I don't think the prior owners ever took the roof off, because it never made noise until we took the top off and replaced it (put it back on).

There are various ways people have lubricated the latches. I use Aerospace 303 protectant on all the rubber and latches. Some say it's best to secure the rear latch first, then the front ones in unison to prevent tweaking the top. Best regards

As I inferred, lots of miles. Lots of posts, but Coupe top -specific issues were never on my radar before now.
Vaseline? Seems like a good way to degrade the seals (like dissolving like). ??

I have zero experience here but from what these guys are saying about lubrication on the latches, I would want something that would cling to the latch. Maybe some white lithium grease? That’s what I’ve always used on door hinges.... It’s pretty weather-proof too.

I use silicone grease on all the rubber mating gaskets, a VERY light coating. Also there's a way to use o-rings on those (4 I think) male pins, the o-ring makes the seal a little tighter and the creaking stops. Not sure what size o-ring but I know it's a common size and you can get them at Lowes or HD. I'm sure someone will chime in with more info...good luck.

I shrink wrapped the two pins. That is a metal to metal connection. Silent now for five years and I don't have to worry about getting grease on me anytime I remove the roof.
$5.00 for shrink wrap in the electrical department at Home Depot and 10 minutes of my time. No grease here and no noise

Thanks all! It seems a simple enough fix.

Lisa,
I have used all of the methods ever listed to keep the top free of noise. O-Rings, Shrink wrap on the posts, C-clip on the older style front latches, lubricate the front latches, and assure that the rear latch is adjusted properly so as to keep the rear of the top tight against the rubber seals. Of couse the most important is to keep the weatherstripping rubber well lubricated.
I find that when I remove the top, the weatherstripping tends to get dry due to the wind, so I recoat the front and rear rubber lightly with lubricant prior to re-installing the top back on.
My top is always quiet, and has been for years.

I would agree with the other posters that you need to use lubrication on the weather seals to minimize or eliminate the squeak/popping noises

I second this post. There is not a permanent fix as the C7 roof creeks also. Of course if you rarely take off the roof then there shouldn't be much of an issue.

Mrs. owc6, did you get rid of your '05? Or do you have 3 now...inquiring minds want to know! Your '05 was always the bellwether for all us other '05 owners, 23X,XXX miles and still running strong...

Yes I still have Bertha.
She is just shy of a quarter-million miles . Unfortunately, she has to live outside, but we're not going to sell her until she has at least that banner .
She sure is a tough old broad!
I guess I need to update my Avatar with a pic of all three together.
