Default Easiest quickest way to remove AC belt? Cut off?

Shop tell me the loud squeal I have is from the pulley on the compressor and the compressor needs to be replaced. What’s the easiest way to take off the ac belt so I can confirm? I don’t mind cutting it off if that’s possible. Thanks.

Before you cut belt off, take take a bar of soap and touch it to inside of belt with engine running, change? I use regular Ivory bar soap.

Yeah. I mean I wonder if the belt just needs to be replaced or if it’s a pulley. They assured me it wasn’t the harmonic balancer. Serp belt was just replaced. But the ac belt is pretty old.

Good luck touching the a/c belt with a bar of soap with the car running. I like my fingers more than that.

😂😂 yeah. I agree. I’m not doing that. I watched a tech lose his finger with a running air cooled 911. I’m not making that mistake.

Easiest way is squirt some water on the belt, it will stop squeaking right away if it the belt.

Yeah. Shop is telling me it’s the pulley on the compressor that is squealing and not the belt. Just try to see if that is correct.

Put water on the belt and you'll know instantly.

Thanks. Water on the belt will mask a squeel from a pulley?

Old trick. Spray a little on the belt, it'll generally stop a squeak long enough to know it's causing said squeak.

NFW....its probably the idler pulley.....2nd guess the tensioner pulley but the pulley on the compressor wouldn't squeal, the belt, maybe, the pulley...no

I sprayed the ac belt with water just below the harmonic balancer and the noise went away. But it’s hard to tell since a little water does get on the serp and hb. But the serp belt is brand new. I’m guessing at this point it’s either the ac belt or the hb. I guess lll take the ac belt off and see if the squeel is still there.

With the belt off you can spin the idler and tensioner pulley by hand and probably tell if its bad.

I had a bad belt squeal too. It turned out to be the idler pulley bearing on the AC belt had failed. I guess you could just cut the AC belt and then spin test the idler, tensioner and AC pulley to see if either of them feel a little rough (would be kind of a waste if the belt was still healthy). If the belts and pullies have unknown or high mileage, you could just replace both belts, both idlers and both tensioners, thats what I did.

thanks. the ac belt has 60k miles on it and has never been replaced. Im hoping its just the belt. serp belt was just replaced. I guess Im going to take off the ac belt and see if the noise is still there. at least I can narrow it down from there. just hoping its not the harmonic balancer which seems to be what many are telling me it is.
