Yes, when I first got mine, it was doing the same thing. Happened to me several times. I have noticed that I need to give it a good firm push into 1st gear. My car gives you the feeling you are in 1st with a fairly solid "click" Unfortunately, this does not result in fully engaging 1st gear. However, if I continue to push, the stick will move froward another 1/4 inch or so, to the stops, and then it is solidly in gear. I have never had it pop out of 1st once the stick is in that position. Sometimes it goes into first gear much easier when I go to 2nd initially and then to first.
Since I have been conscious of the feel of 1st gear, I have not had it happen again. I'm chalking my issue up to "user learning curve"!

No fix needed. My 2004 z06 was like that until I got used to it, then forgot about it. Had the mgw too. 2019 GS is similar but much more solid of a tranny. They take a little getting used to but that’s why I like them. Like was suggested make sure you’re all the way into 1st....and punch it, that last part may not have been in there.
PS: whups I didn’t realize I was in the ZR1 area. Probably still pertinent.

IMO the best dollar for dollar mod, totally improves the way the M7 shifts...

Common problem on most Tremec 6 and 7 speed transmission used in the Corvette for the last 21 model years. The solution as stated above is to shove hard to make sure the transmission is all the way into gear. Has nothing to do with what shifter is mounted to the bracket on top of the transmission. Most of them will nibble a little when shifting from 1st to 2nd until the transmission warms up after a cold start. Most will stop nibbling after a half to 1 mile drive.

I had the mgw shifter installed in my car the second day I had it, but after reading this post I noticed there is a little bit of resistence going into 1st. Enough to give you the false feeling that its in the gate fully. This is my observation, hope it helps!

Have the same thing happen daily on mine no matter how hard I push it into gear. Also wierdly enough, my skip shift doesnt lock me out either - ever, which I suppose is a good thing but will bring it into dealer who has experienced the issue in my car. He said he will try to see if an adjustment is needed. That grinding sound when it pops out if your hand is still on the shifter eats away at my soul......

I used to believe shoving harder was the only solution until I got my 19 and noticed it does not have the issue nearly as bad. The feel didn't change in 10,000 miles on the 18 and has not changed in 4500 miles on the 19. Not sure why there is so much difference from car to car.

Holy Thread Resurrection!
My 2019 C7 ZR1 has had this issue since day one.
Mentioned it to the dealer at first service, they did an adjustment and not improvement.
Mentioned it at the next service and they said" keep an eye on it".
I just had the 24,000-mile service done and we discussed this First Gear Disengagement issue.
The result was that the dealer removed on of the shift lever boots that is in the car for sound reduction of road noise.
This is a GM recommended action - IT DID NO GOOD.
I've have noticed the shifter is sometimes reluctant to "snick" into first. It feels as if something is resisting the motion. That feeling did not change with shift boot removal. Road noise is minimally louder.
My next move is to contact GM Customer Care as that last "repair" cost me about $600.00 out of pocket as the car is no longer in warranty.
It should be warranty work as the problem was discovered and reported at first service.
I cut my teeth on spur gears and no synchromesh, so the "habit" of pulling the shifter into second, then pushing into first is present. That works MOST of the time.
Any additional information?

Hi Chuck and congratulations on the ZR! Enjoy!
Almost 5 years later nothing new. Car behaves exactly as you described. I’ve just gotten used to it. Not worth having it be used as an experiment to find a cause/solution and risk something else going on.
Other than that annoyance it’s been problem free and a lot of FUN!
