high voltage above 2000 rpm 17.9-18v
I need to know on my 85 if the alternator has an external voltage regulator or internal and just get another one and be done with it, easy intall.
engine higher RPM voltimeter shows 17.9-18v and cruising at 14.5v idle 13.5 v rev it up voltage shoots up and check engine light will pop on then shut off

A loose connection of a battery cable, a poor ground of your battery negative cable, or a poor connection at your alternator could also cause the problem. Especially the small connector on the alternator (which plugs directly into your voltage regulator in the alternator).
Replacing the internal regulator in your '85 alternator is easy. There are kits available for that task. Mark the orientation of the end housings so it goes back together the same way it came apart. Check the internal diodes in the alternator with a multimeter while you have it apart. There is a hole in the rear housing to insert a wire thru to hold the brushes up while you slide the housing back together.
