When you wanna reach thru the phone....
You ever have one of those people you wanna reach thru the phone and choke........
Back in August I was contacted by a NCRC Master Judge inquiring about my 1967 Corvette that he saw on the forum. We talked about he car at length several times. He kept telling me he and his friends we’re coming down to look at the corvette.
We went back and forth on price. He explained that the Exchange Rate was “killing him”. It was going to affect the purchase price by $30,000. I told him that wasn’t my problem move to the USA!
So we agree on a price and then he insists I get the car Certified by Al Grenning and he will pay for all costs involved. I then go out and buy a Macro Lens for our 35mm camera take all pictures required by CCAS. He emails several times thru the process asking “do we still have a deal” and is the car certification done yet?
The CCAS Certification comes back and all is good. I send a picture of it to the prospective buyer only to receive back “congratulations “. 2 days later I get an email from the Master Judge saying “so do we have a deal at $10,000 less than the agreed price!
Needless to say it flat pissed me off that he had Jacked me around for weeks and will pay for “all costs involved”. He said the exchange rate is not good, which was the same rate as when the deal began. He was the one that made the offer and had me certify the car! I told him to go away and take my # out of his phone and delete my email.
Just needed to Vent.
Thanks to to those of you that have been very helpful.
PS - CCAS LLC Al Grenning was Awesome and I would highly recommend

I'm just hard headed enough to never deal with him again, period. I had a deal th a neighbor to buy a 62. Apparently over the holiday weekend everyone convinced him how much it was worth and he should sell it on EBay. Yes I was pissed.

Did this potential buyer pay for the certification up front or was he to pay for it in the purchase price? If someone asked me to have my car certified they would be paying for it up front as a point of good faith of the deal if they were requiring it as part of the deal.
Is this guy advertising in the WTB section? If so, I would be PMing anyone responding to him and relaying your experience with him.

What a douche. Sorry you had to deal with that.
Dreading selling one of my motorcycles soon for that very reason...
On the positive side, you still have the car in your possession, so it’s all good!

...or a "Master-Baiter"...., see what I did there? I spelled it Baiter vice Bater because he "Baited" you with a potential sale..., which was a play on the word "Bater" which, well...., you know, describes him.

You were polite. I WOULD NOT have told him to go away and delete the emails. My comments would have been MUCH MORE offensive and stronger!
It is NOT necessary for people to have to put up with these jerks. Actually, I would have dismissed him at the beginning of the negotiations.
My 56 IS NOT for sale-----------and probably never will be. But if it were, the price would be the price, take it or leave it and get out of my face.

He asked that I pay for the Certification since CCAS will only certify for current owner. I had to send Al a copy of title and proof of insurance. He said he would reimburse when he purchased the car.
He is a regular on the CF and did advertise WTB.
Thanks

LOL That’s Absolutely the Funniest thing today!
I was thinking of answering the Master Judge question with “I think he’s a Masterbater!!
At least we’re on the same page!

So, he negotiated a price that you accepted, asked for the certification that he would pay with the price of the car and after you had it certified he tried to re-negotiate the price? If this is the way it went then he at least owes you for the cert. cost. However he has shown his true colors, is not a man of his word and if this is the case he should be outed to the forum community

When you are the seller in the future always remember you have what they want. You don't have to give an inch or put up with any baloney. If the buyer senses you are soft on price they will hem and haw trying to best take advantage of you.
You find all types trying to buy your stuff.
They can only take advantage of you if you open the door.
I have held firm on price with buyers that were obnoxious and lowered price after the agreement because the buyer was great to work with and I wanted to help them out.
As the seller you hold the cards unless it needs to be a quick sale, then dropping price to get the needed result is the only option.
If you hold a nice car you will get your price from a good buyer.
Be Patient.

He has been a member since 2005 and you would think he would have a little respect for other members. I am sure this car will be sold when someone looking for a car like this shows up to look at it. Thanks

The point is he is not a man of his word—a dirtball. He should be outed so others here that he may contact to buy from can know what to expect

I assume from the original post this is a Canadian buyer (or other foreign?) based on the exchange rate comment. These days you need to get a read on the level of motivation for these buyers. Reason I say that is the CDN exchange rate is in the toilet (75 cents). Add provincial tax, fed tax, importing (no duties though), inspections, certifications and a $50k US car lands in Canada at up to $80k CDN. This is why we buy cars from US when rate is closer to par (like 2014) and sell back to US when it is much less (like now). So - Canada is mostly sellers into US market at this time - not buyers.
For many large purchases that can survive a timeline or negotiation period, standard practice is to 'watch' the exchange rate and act when it is favorable. Like buying stocks. Unfortunately, this delays purchase and the seller gets the brunt of this. If exchange rate really is the issue (which is not your problem) and you still wish to deal with him, you can always ask for deposit and a 48 hour ROFR while he waits for it rate to improve. This will test motivation.
