99 ECBM and paint ? VERT
Are the pre 2001 cars a should steer clear because of this issue ? and if a car needs paint because it sat out is that a real bad sign ' which it is " , I am looking at a 99 at a deal but it needs paint and a top but it is low mileage and all the service lights are in OK mode. The ECBM I hear is the real problem with these cars if they go out ........
Thanks for the education.....

I have a '99 vert, and haven't had any issues with the ECBM. I didn't let it bother me when looking for my Vette.

From what I have seen on this forum, sometimes EBCMs do fail on pre '01 cars. Maybe it will and maybe it won't. You have to decide if you want to take the chance.

Thanks, from my reading in my head I would say a pre 2001 is knock 2 grand off right from the start with this issue that could rise. Is that being realistic or stupid ? a good paint job will run how much ? the car looks good but the paint is going fast..... Unless I can get it real cheap I think I should probably steer clear, he claims it drives and runs like a car with 35 on the clock.....but was left outside with tinted windows so the interior looks good....

Knock 2 grand off? Off of what? Most of the cars are priced according to current market. Compare other cars to each other if similar quality, mileage, etc.
Paint cost can vary drastically, all depends on what you want. Go look at the car and drive it. Check out the sticky above regarding what and how to look for certain things with these cars.

My '98 purchased with 145k miles that I drove up to 176K miles didn't have a problem. However, if I lived in a state that requires the ABS to be working to pass inspection, I would be hesitant to buy a pre '01.

Boy oh boy...needing paint is a big deal and is pretty spendy IMO (had 2 vintage mustangs resprayed, and i did much of the prep work myself) A good paint job is DEFINITELY not cheap. Add to that the fact that depending on the quality, it may not meet your expectations. Just my 2 cents worth but i would sure take some pics and talk to a few paint shops to get an idea of how much it will be (and try and talk to a few car guys in your area to find out who the good painters are-ive seen some guys brag about their $2000 paint job-looked like someone literally used a case of krylon spray bombs unfortunately). Just would hate to see you take the paint thing too lightly, as there are some incredible vettes out there for very reasonable prices that don't have paint issues Good luck!

A bad paint job would affect my price offer for sure. Thinking a seller will knock two grand off for a part that may or may not fail anytime soon is IMO not a rational conclusion. I know I wouldn’t do it.

Exactly, the paint is a big deal. I was going to buy " probably should have " a 2001 mint with 50 thou on it for 13.5 so a pre 01 is only worth 11.5 in my book......I would add a grand if it is the color I want so 12.5 is all I would spend on a mint pre 01...... 01 to 04 15 tops and a Z06 C5...... might as well buy a 2008 base C6 as you can get nice ones for around 20......
This car is alot cheaper than that and it should be...

FWIW, I'd think an early C-5 that is still working correctly will likely be OK.
with that said, if it should fail, the going price for a 'used working' early EBCM is around $1500 for a non active handling unit, and about $500 for active handling. Only available from someone that has dismantled a salvage car.

I need to stick with my objective and get a Silver 01-03 so it will match the Z06 HT I bought and maybe I won't have to do any paint work.
It seems like the silver cars are more money ? I know the blacks are more, I will keep looking but do not want to spend more than 15.
What happens if you run the car with a bad brake unit ? that issue really does suck I guess...... The 99 I am looking at does not have the issue with a faulty ECBM according to the seller..
Thanks...

Just looked at a 99 on CL that came up and is clean for 105 thou, the add says ABS light just came on. Is this more than likely the ECBM ? The Add says 8800 OBO and the car has all kinds of new parts n tires.
I am just curious.......

I meant to say about $500 more (than non active) for the active handling. $1500. and 2000.
