Those with LS swaps, please step inside
DISCLAIMER: I have no intention or replacing the engine in my '64 coupe!!!
I do however have a 6.0L LS engine in my daily driver 1972 C20 Suburban. My question for those of you who have completed the swap into your Vette (or other vintage iron) is what kind of crank case ventilation system are you running? Currently I have a line running from the valley cover, through a vented catch can, back to a fitting in the intake. Additionally, I have a breather on the passenger side valve cover. In theory, the vacuum from the intake is pulling air from the crank case (without oil residue entering the intake), while fresh air is entering via the breather on the valve cover. I see many LS engines that are not running a breather on either valve cover. I'd like to replace my covers with a used set of original C2 valve covers and an adapter which would eliminate the breather as I have no intention of drilling a hole in either valve cover. Does anyone see any issue with eliminating the valve cover breather (other than purist opinions about C2 valve covers on anything other than a C2)?
Thanks for the help,
Greg

Typically no modern engine has a breather that I know of. They all run with the crank case under vacuum. A lot of LS engines pull from the valve covers but they tend to burn oil. So there is a service bulletin to swap to the valley tray location. There is very little oil in this area as the lifters are enclosed. There is nothing to sling the oil around. My LS1 and my LS3 will pull from the tray. I just looked at a stock 4.8 and it's the same way.

Much appreciated...its been a few years since I worked on a stock LS. If I remember correctly, there is a line going from the passenger valve cover to a fitting in front of the throttle body on a stock C5, in a addition to the crank case vent from the valley cover going to the intake.

Greg, here are some pics of the LS (L99) from a 2012 Camaro that I installed in my 1988 LR Defender last year. You can see the drivers VC fitting that passes over the manifold and connects to the intake just past the MAF (important). That is stock. I gather you are moving the coil packs? Another option for you to consider is to install a PCV valve in the side of the VC like PML does.
Comes out the top, rear of the drivers side VC...
...goes into the throttle body side of the MAF.

Thanks Mark, any more pics of the Defender? I'd kill for an LS swapped LRD some day!

If you have questions about LS swaps in general, my brother in Raleigh is a great source. Send me a PM if you would like his number. I will try send him this link.

It was a 90. The hot ticket is the 110. Maybe next time...
Glad to hear somebody’s wife loves it. My wife referred to as the Offender.

Hahahaha....I figure there's bound to be at least one who verbally thrashes me without fully reading the post first. That being said, popular opinion would indicate that I've already "ruined a perfectly good car"....what harm could an LS swap do? Are there varying levels of "ruined"? Kind of like an inverses NCRS grading criteria? In all honesty, I love the LS motor, but the only way I'd ever put one in my '64 would be if the original motor grenaded itself in such catastrophic fashion that it wasn't rebuildable....ie the block was cracked.
