Default The project car I always wanted

Hello All!
I bought my 79' L-82 in November of 2017 and it actually looks worse now that when I first had the flatbed drop it off in my driveway. since then I was able to get the motor running smoothly after installing an Edelbrock carb and upgrading the rubber fuel line. Tackling the brakes now so the car can be driveable. It is my first time trying to fix up a corvette and my budget is not very large (Would be much smaller if my wife would have it her way) but I hope to be able to drive the car next summer. I bought a single stage paint system in Metalic charcoal color to paint the entire car. This will be my second time trying to paint a car so wish me luck. I will try to post updates of the work and I look forward to getting some good advice and answers to what I expect will be a lot of questions I will probably have. So far this forum is my favorite reading material while at work!

Default Paint time

So i tackled the paint job in my garage using sherwinn williams urathane single stage paint. I spent around $500 in all the materials and I am pretty happy with the results for an amateur painter.

The hood and fender had some cracks come up so had to address and repaint the nose. Looks much better.

Metallic charcoal is going to look great on a 79.

Front and rear pace car spoilers also add a great deal in the appearance department to a 78/79.

Great minds think alike! I already fitted the rear one. Hope to be able to buy a front one soon. BTW your thread about adapting the rear bumper to your corvette is insane! Awesome work!

Carb, brakes, and paint. If you have those three process down pat, all else is a breeze.

I added a front and rear pace car spoiler to my 79, and I have to say, I love it! Your 79 looks pretty nice as it sits. I'm guessing maybe it doesn't look quite as good up close.

Yeah, the picture makes it look way better. It has a lot of inperfections in the paint, a crack in the front bumber and paint bubbles all over the hood. Yours looks awesome. I love the black car with red interior!

Yes a lot of sweat, some blood but no tears. I've enjoyed every minute so far. I've tried to used as much of the original parts as it can get expensive. Plan on getting it painted next summer. Just got the interior back together. Here's is a before and after.

Nice! My interior needs a lot of help too and I am also trying to keep the budget relatively low.

Here are a couple of pictures of what i have started doing. I know i could have waited to change the steering wheel later but that thing. Just looked too ugly.

Before

After

$90 grant steering wheel and found the horn button on amazon for about $40

I also bought some seat upholstery from ebay and did my first attempt at recovering the passenger seat. The backrest turned out ok but the seat cushion was a nightmare. I will take it apart and redo it. Hands keps cramping up whike doing it

Before

After

I kind of like the original skinning factory steering wheel. I had a 64 Nova back in the early 70's and I had put on one of those 10 inch racing steering wheels. Wasn't easy parking the car since it had no power steering. Below is a pic of my 78 to give you an idea of what it looks like with the dash removed. To my surprise I manage to get it all back together and working LOL.

I like the original one too. I wish it would have come with it but I have always liked the wood too. I'm sure I will get bored of it at some point and switch back to the original.

I am too scared to attempt removing my entire dash right now. Maybe down the road when I start feeling more confortable with it. I had read on another thread that you shoud remove the steering column before removing the dash. how easy was it to take out with the steering column still there?

It wasn't to hard removing the dash without dropping the steering wheel/column. I have the tilt/telescopic column so I was able to get enough room to pull it out. I did have to drop the column later to get the gauge cluster out. It is a little tight getting the bolts our but it was workable.

Thank you. I appreciate the info. I will have to give it a try.
