Default Can I wait till 1,000 miles for my first ZR1 oil change?

Drive back from NCM plans are easiest if I can wait. Will it hurt?

Hi Les,

I built my engine at the Engine Build Experience and Bryan Lee, who runs the engine build center, stressed the importance of the 500 mile oil change on a couple of occasions. Also, we did the museum delivery and they were adamant that I do an oil change no later than 500 miles and strongly suggested sooner was better than later. Our delivery specialist was very specific and emphasized how important it was. They were going to make arrangements at a dealer on my way home to be sure it got done. However, I shipped my car back so didn't need to do that. I did the 1st oil change at 497 miles. Based on my delivery experience, I would absolutely stop on the way home and get the oil changed! Just my $0.02 worth....

I wouldn't worry about it myself, just do it asap when you get home, though I'm sure some here will disagree.

I regret going to a dealer just to satisfy the 500 mile change; they were very close to 500 miles from NCM, being in the Little Rock area. They screwed it up and refused to correct it on the spot. I wish I would have just driven it all the way home and done it myself so I know it was done right.

What did they screw up?

Ah,

I’ll just copy and paste from a PM just discussing this:

Thanks man. The short story is I did a Museum Delivery on a 2017 C7Z06 around Nov 2016* on a Friday. Drove the car to Gwatney on Saturday morning for the 500 mile change on my way home. Asked the Service Advisor to put in 9 quarts and hand me the 10th per other people’s experiences on CF. Once done, they handed me the keys; I asked where the 10th quart was. They put all 10 in the car. I asked if they checked the oil level as it was likely above limits, they said no. I told them I was going to warm the car up and check the level properly before leaving. Sure enough the level was clearly above the Max line.

Owners Manual has a *caution* note above the risk of engine damage for such an occurrence. I showed them and asked them to reduce the level within spec or redo the oil change. All staff (including the service manager over the phone) refused and swore up and down that the “right way” is to add 10.0 quarts to a 10.0 quart oil system with no regard for residual oil or just taking 1 minute to check the dip stick. This was with me showing them the dipstick and the owners manual procedure.

The tech also had an attitude about the situation. Leaving the dealer, I had to open a claim with GM customer service to document the dealer’s deviation from a maintenance procedure and protect my warranty on a car I’ve owned for less than 12 hours. I drove straight to Walmart and used a fluid transfer pump and had to suction out about 4/10 quart just to get down to the max line.

I went to them by the request of my wife to reward myself, by having the dealer conduct the service, for being able To purchase our first new Corvette as well as good reviews on CF. Never again.

I found a higher up contact at the dealer and explained the situation with photos of the manual’s Caution message, the dip stick above full, overage measurements, etc. This was solely to make him aware of his Service Manager’s and Tech’s incompetence with no request to do anything for me.

Putting too much oil is somewhat forgiveable if it is an error. Refusing to check your work, or more importantly, refusing the correct your mistakes once realized is not forgiveable to me.

You do what you think is best it is your car, but just let me caution you about one thing the brake in oil is thiner than the 0/40 they now recommend. So when you reach 500 I would still take it easy until you get it changed. It has fine metal shavings in it as you probably know you don't need going high RPM's through the supercharger or the engine period. Not trying to be a know it all, having one of these awesome cars myself I would hate anything to go wrong over 500 miles without the proof you followed the instructions to a tee. That would be all the excuse they would need to say so sorry sir.

Not to argue with you but curious where you saw the "thinner" break in oil information. I know the owners manual mentions break in oil but I wasn't aware that it is thinner oil, it could be 0W-40 and since they want it changed early they are just referring to it as break in oil. Decades ago I think the "break in oil" was thinner but those engines were "roughly" assembled compared to Corvette engines today. Maybe I'm wrong, just wondering myself.

My bad they are not using the 5/30 for break in as was previous used, as of 2018 they are now using the 0/40 I just did some checking my mistake.

Thanks and no problem, I know on my 08 Z06 Museum del. they told me it did not have break in oil but thought that could have changed with the 500 mi. oil change. Still I agree on taking it easy on it for at least the first 500 mi. or oil change.

For some dumb reason, if it's not documented it was done at 500 miles could they mess with your warranty?

If I'm not mistaken & remember correctly, when the 2015 Z06 was released the first recommended oil change was at 1,500 miles. A forum member's engine (new 2015 Z06) blew up. Not knowing the whole story & piecing it together from what I read on here GM replaced it & broke down the engine that blew and then came back with the 500 mile oil change recommendation.

FWIW I also believe you'd be okay waiting to 1000 miles.
I believe some Asian sport bikes (higher revving/ stressed) say oil change at 1000.

I'd assume to the 500 recommendation is to remove assembly lubes and break-in metal shavings.
But, for me, I would change as close as possible to 500 as that's the OEM recommendation.

Enjoy your new Vette.
