Failed inspection due to lack of tread on brand new Cup 2's
I took my 2015 3LZ Z06/Z07 with 6300 miles to get inspected on brand new Cup 2's (24 miles/no track time) and the inspector failed my car due to lack of tire tread (Virginia, Prince William County). The inspector said, the tires had been on the track too much and weren't legal. I explained that they are OEM, DOT legal and pointed out the DOT markings on the tires. Then the inspector recommend that I call Uber to get a ride home because the car is just not safe to drive....

Do your major tread grooves (the ones with the tread wear indicators) have more than 2/32 of tread? If the wear indicators aren't showing then the tire is legal in all 50 states. it doesn't matter that the big blocks at the outside of the tread look like slicks. They aren't part of the major tread grooves and don't have wear bars. Hopefully, you said screw it and drove it home.

Sounds like the inspector needs some retraining or at least become familiar with what comes stock on some cars! Had an inspection in Virginia years ago on a van that I but side exits on. It was declined because it wasn’t factory, even though that is exactly where Dodge vans were placed (mine was a Chevy). Went to another station and the inspector was more reasonable. Like to know how this one comes out, good luck!

I agree this guy does not know what he is inspecting. Did he say you were not allowed to drive the car home? If not take it to the dealer and have them get it reinspected.

This happened to me in Texas at a typical inspection station, luckily before they issued me a fail ticket. Brought it to my local Chevy dealer that sells/services lots of vettes and passed with no problem. I have a tire gauge and they were at 4/32nds so well within legal range.
Even new people comment they are dangerous and used up.

That's why I like Georgia. The only inspection is for emissions and in a few counties there's NO required inspection at all.

Absolutely, I even showed them with my tread depth gauge! I put the tires on and then drove to the inspection station; there is absolutely no wear on the tires from the factory..... Then I showed them pics of the tires on the Michelin web site with the tread depth identified in their specs for how they are produced. It was like waking up in the middle of an episode of the Twighlight Zone. I went and got my emissions tested at another facility and went home. Luckily, we move back to SoCal in April so this inspection doesn't really matter....

Sometimes I hate living in SC. This is certainly not one of those situations. There is no inspection so I don't have to worry about having "off-road" xpipes, mods, car too low, any of that stuff. Or having a garish sticker on my windshield ruining the clean look of my car
