Default 69 side mirror, glass removal

i goggled this but didn't come up with much, probably because it is impossible. The original side mirror on my 69 needs replating to be perfect, and I need to remove the date coded glass, and disassemble the mirror, is this possible?

Let the mirror soak overnight in lacquer thinner. The glass will loosen and come right off.

I used gas in a bucket. Just leave it outside for safety. It only took a hour or so.

It works. Just sit it face down into the gas or lacquer thinner (uses less fluid). It'll be loose shortly....

This might help if your mirror is not tight and starts to droop at speed:

Update, soaked it in lacquer thinner all day, no luck yet, chipped the corner ever so slightly tying to pry it a bit.

Is it possible that your mirror has already had a "repair" made to it? The usual 'fix' is to reattach the mirror using Ultra Black RTV....and that will NOT cause the mirror to detach. The same may be true with some aftermarket mirrors. (but I think you stated that it had an original date code?)

Dave, I have a spare piece of 69 mirror glass if you or anyone else needs it. Free of charge!

I soaked mine for two days with the gas method and the original mirror glass came right off.

Like with all old things, you gotta be patient.

7T1vette is probably right, if it is factory adhesive, it will fall off pretty fast in the gasoline soak. I have 2 small diamond files, a 320 and 600. Using wet, I can file out edge chips in glass.

Well it's been three days, and the mirror is still stuck, mind you , I was using Laquer thinner, not gas, I suspect that someone replaced it already with date coded glass, just like I will after I pry it out of there and break it in the process. Great tip though , I'm sure it works perfectly on an original mirror.

Try gas before you destroy your mirror. Should work.
