Default Front Skinnies For Drag Racing

Once a year I get to drag race at the nearby airport in my region. There, I get to play in both my avatar car and the '69 Vette. This year I may also take a buddy up on his offer to trailer the '69 Vette to the nearest drag strip, which is 2 hours away. The crew I race against at the airport gets more serious every year- I love it! But what this means is that I need to do what I can to stay in the game. Just about everybody has front skinnies, not to mention forced induction and hits of nitrous.

So, I've spent a fair part of the day trying to find a skinny 26" tall radial tire to put on the skinny wheels I want to buy. There are plenty of choices in bias ply tires but not many in radials. They're either short, as in 24", or too wide to really make a difference. I need radials because I'm running MT drag radials out back.

Does anybody know of a skinny 26" radial? I'm hoping someone has been through this, or knows someone who has, and has found a good option. Thanks!

If you want the low rolling resistance of a drag tire...the bias will drive fine at the track. The racing tires are rounded like a motorcycle tire and have little rubber in contact. perfect for straightline stuff. I've got Mickey Thompsons on mine.

Otherwise some VW tires work OK...but aren't too tall.

Hoosier makes a 185 radial that is around 26” tall. It’s the ones I’ve run on Weld magnum wheels. Also M&H makes a nice front runner radial 185. They aren’t as light as bias plies, but will drive a little better on the street. On the track the bias ply is fine. You’ll likely need spacers for any front runner wheel you’ll run to clear the calipers unless you’re having a specific wheel made.

I use these FT on a 5.5" rim and use the 8 ply. Its stiff, but sidewall makes it drive better. Cant let em sit too long or the flat stop but drive out quick.

Yessir, that's the one I've been eyeballing. It's almost 6" wide. I was hoping for less width but I think that's about as good as it'll get in a radial.

Thanks Jim. Another track guy mentioned the VW tires but I couldn't find anything much above about 25" tall. As for running bias tires, I'm a bit gun shy. A long time ago I used to run bias Sportsman Pros on the back of the '69 with radials on the front and from about half track on it was doing a wicked scary dance. I don't know if reversing the mix would eliminate the problem.

Thanks Alan. That last part is definitely something I'll look into.

Les, Chevrolet made a 5" X 15" rally wheel back in the 60's that was used on some of the sedans that were ordered with disc brakes. They look and fit the Corvette disc brakes just like the normal Corvette rally wheel. They do use a narrower trim ring but accept the standard center caps.

I stumbled across a pair back in 1970 that I planned to use on my '63 when I was drag racing it, but never got around to it. They're not easy to find, but they are out there.

I just noticed that Coker is offering them in 5"X15" now.

Good luck... GUSTO

Be careful...you'll end up with a similar pile of tires for various events like I have. LOL

LOL, I've seen tire stores with less inventory than that!
