Default Question about painting?

I'm installing tpe rear wide fenders..my car is machine silver and not sure if I should just paint the fenders most likely wont match..or should I blend the paint? I was told m/s would be hard to match..just not sure which way to go?

I think that this is going to come down to the ability of that painter. Maybe ask their opinions?

Painting I understand. What is blending may I ask. Never heard of it till this forum.
I looked it up and it is what I thought it was. Have done it on boats. Thanks anyway.

blending new paint into the original paint so you can see the difference in paint...hope this helps!

My painter had to blend Nassau Blue metallic to old panels and did it perfectly. The paint also retains the correct purple-ish hue that Nassau Blue takes on in low lighting.

I wouldn't be worried if you take it to a QUALITY painter that knows what they're doing. You might ask some of the local Corvette clubs there in NY on who they take their cars to.

If it were mine I would blend the paint. Much better chance of not seeing a difference IMHO. I painted a door on my speedway white coupe and blended it and it came out great. White is very forgiving compared to your color.

A really good painter can do a pretty decent job of matching the paint, but it will, in all likelihood, never be a 100% perfect match.

This means that 99.9999872% of the population will never notice, but to you it will stick out like a sore thumb...likely leading to a lack of sleep, bouts of scream-crying whenever you're out in the sun with the car, stress-induced heart attack, and an early grave.

Just go ahead and blend it and save yourself the trouble of only being able to drive the car on moonless nights.

The paint job will have to be blended. In 16 years of journeyman-level painting, I never ever saw a painter butt match a panel IN ANY COLOR well enough to skip blending, if the car was gonna be in a show. (this is a survey of 13 painters among three different shops) Sure, there were times when some matches were *extremely* close, but anyone dealing with colors for a living--auto painters, house painters, interior decorators--all these folks could spot a butt match repair. Good auto painters can do it at a glance, and really good ones can see a repair from their car at a stoplight. (It's part of the "plague" of color-matching that 20 years after retirement, I still see repairs two lanes over... I bet I can spot 80% of all repairs as cars roll by. Of course that's a subjective claim, but after doing it for so long, they're hard to miss.)

Metallic colors are inherently much, much harder to apply AND match. With different techniques, one can apply a metallic color so that it's different from how it looks in the can--darker, lighter, "flatter" or more "sparkly". A very closely-matching color will have to be blended to be undetectable. The key is the painter must be good enough to know when to accept a computerized tint/match and when he should adjust it with colors for the reason that he can't adjust it enough with his spraying technique. Sooo... yes, it's gotta be blended.

Thanks everyone for the help!! I think the only way for this to look right is to blend it to the front fenders..I decide to change my wheels from ccw's to forged star f14s glossy gunmetal super deep concave in the rears..I think the wheels will separate the car and tires better than black wheels.. I liked the ccw's but dont like the way they look with machine silver. I cant wait to see what this will look like when done!

I agree. I would just have the painter blend into the adjoining panels. There is a better chance that there will not be a noticable difference in the paint between panels.

NOOOooo... Find a painter who can match colors well enough in the can that the painter will only have to blend the *color* across half the next panel. Properly done, the entire "blended" panel should be color-blended for *maybe* just over half the next (blended) panel, and clear-coated across the entire ("blended") panel.

If the color applied requires more blending space, the color is too far off. You don't wanna have to "blend-around-the-corner"; that is, a color applied to a quarter panel that is so badly matched to a door requiring blendwork to (or through) the fender will mean that it should be blended across the rear bumper and the deck lid in order to deceive the eye from a deflective (a. k. a., "obtuse") angle. That is to say, if the color is so badly matched to the door panel, then when you look at the car's side from a perspective where you can see the tail lights, the deck lid and the tail lights will look (and be) a different color. So the starting color has to match the door panel close enough NOT to require color-blending the entire door.

A good painter can computer match your color 99.9%...without "blending"...just saying

This my mismatch from repainting the nose last year. First time painting on a car. Motorcycles much easier. But, I do have another batch of paint to see if I can do better.

I got mine pretty good without blending just painting the hood and Tigershark nose
but then I decided to paint her Nassau Blue

StrangelovesM6Vert- I like how you added LED lights to the tiger shark nose. How did you do it, and where did you get them? I’d like to do the same on my tiger shark.

I used 2 sets of Alpena strip LEDs from Autozone to make a double row.
Wired to driving lights.
The opening is longer than the strips so I butted them together in the middle
with the wires running off both ends.
You can cut the strips to fit.
Used spray glue on the grilles and stuck the strips to that.
There's even gap left on the bottom for some airflow to the ducts.
You could use other strips to do it as well.

Thanks, they look great! I don’t have driving lights, but I wonder if the connections are there for them that I could tap into? If not, l can tap into the side side markers. The mods you’ve done with the tiger shark facia, hood and wheels really work well together.

I hooked them to the 2nd filament of the turn signal bulbs, the ones that don't flash and stay on when you turn the car on.
That's what I meant. I pinched into the parking lights.
