on starting the car just to move it. I like to have my 64 on the lift in the winter to work on it. I work on vehicles part time so eventually will need the lift. I usually roll the car off the lift out into the driveway, then drive whatever i'm working on, onto the lift. When done I then winch the vette back onto the lift, no startup at all. However, moving the car to a different stall in the shop from outside is another story. getting too old too push the car up a slight incline into the shop. So question is, how detrimental is it,really,to start it up and move it into the shop?

I've used a boat winch attached to the back of my garage to pull my race car back in when I needed the garage space for something else.

Agree- good for the car. Gets lubricants moving/protecting in engine and drivetrain, exercises braking system, starter, etc. plus charges battery.

Let it get nice and warm to allow the water that condenses in the products of cold combustion to get out of the exhaust system. Otherwise you could prematurely rust out your exhaust.

I think it's only a bad idea if you start it, move it, then shut it right off. If you're going to start as the others have said let it run a minimum till it reaches operating temperature. If not the condensation will not burn off.

Your practice of not starting the car all winter is more detrimental than firing it up to operating temp on occasion to get its juices flowing...
In fact if it only happens rarely, I'd take it around the block a few times....

I feel your pain - used to roll and push cars in and out of the garage all the time. Not as easy as it once was. I now usually drive the car under my lift in and out and the Vette on the lift off and on. I do usually let it run 10 minutes or so to recharge the battery and warm up the coolant. Not necessarily ideal in my mind but better than any of the alternatives except maybe an electric trailer wrench.
