IMO, no. Look at how much lower the deck surface is in relation to the water pump boss. The fonts look off to me, as well. Broach marks look like the work of a draw-file. Lines going in different directions, not parallel.

Default Aluminum heads

Seams like alot of expense putting on aluminum heads and doing such a bad job on the engine stamp

Looks like an attempt to code it as a 435/ L89. Dennis

where there is money to be made there will always be a attempt to forge something. nobody said it had to be good.. this one I would not bet the farm on. but a overall look at the car would be helpful

I personally think it looks suspicious. The VIN derivative is not all on a straight line like it should be and as GTOGuy mentioned the broach marks do not look original.

Good luck... GUSTO

Check out a few more truly original blocks and stamping.

Shape of the numbers is wrong for most, Depth of stamping is mixed and irregular.

This stamp is not close. But if you are going to make one up why not make it an L89 or a L88 for that matter

For what it's worth, the car is listed as an L89 in Noland Adams survey data. So it's been claimed as an L89 for at least 30 years.

It I truly had a real L89, I would pay a few thousand for a decent engine stamp job. Just sayin'

More than a few of those cars (with very early transformations) became legendary within their communities as just that, L79's, L72's, L71's, L89's and yes, even L88's. Having grown up in that era, I witnessed a few transformations myself. Today if you talk with folks from the era about those very cars, they only remember them as the cars they became.

Swapping a 427 (396?) into a small block Corvette back then was about as common as flared fenders and lace paint jobs. Oh the good old days...
