As mentioned your transmission is at the rear of the car attached to the differential. There is no real way to "check" the transmission other than lifting the car (ensuring it is level) and removing the fill plug (it's the same as the transmission temp sensor; that's where fluid goes in). The service manual says that manual transmission fluid requires no service but ideally you should change the fluid, even on lower mileage cars. Replacing +15 year old transmission fluid does wonders for a lot of shifting issues. If you're unable to do it or concerned about doing it properly you can likely find a Corvette specialty shop in PA that will do it at a competitive price compared to the dealer. Ask the local clubs who they take their car to.
