You are talking about the open top air cleaner from the 60's with the foam filter under a metal grid....right?
Had one in my 67 Camaro way back when....
A simple backfire (incorrect distributor timing) and the foam caught on fire and burned up.
Not a big problem under my then metal hood because it was open.
Under a closed fiberglass hood you could burn the whole thing up.
Same goes for those glass fuel filters.

Many others have commented on these issues before.

Check it out.

I’ve read about the issues with these air filters and don’t plan on using it for driving or even having it on with the engine running. Looking to get one for the nostalgia more than for use as an air cleaner. I’d be afraid of foam pieces breaking off and falling into to intake or worse the fire from burning foam under fiberglass!! Thanks for the info though.

Yeah it looked cool on my Camaro.
But I agree....looks coolest on wall of the shop.
Best wishes for you and your cars

I have one for sale. I think we discussed it. It is 12 inches in diameter, but the carb opening is 4 5/16 inches, which is for an older WCFB or Rochester 4GC style carb.

Thanks but I’m looking for the 5 1/8 (?) carb opening size.
