Default '59 Turn Signal

Dear Members,

Somehow one day driving, my signal lever got loose moving around a little bit. I took the steering wheel off and look at the turn signal cancelling cam. It looks like nothing is broken. However from the picture one below it looks like there supposed to be a machine screw thru the hole to hold the cam in one place.

Below is picture of when I take out the cam. Should I go to like a hardware store and buy a simple phillips machine screw type or is there a special screw for this?

Thank you in advance for your help.

That is a large smooth-shouldered screw to let the cam move easily. Repro vendors have them. Don’t use regular hardware store screws. You will see several pictures of that screw installed and by itself in this document by a forum member. Technically its called a pivot bolt and can be purchased here:

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I am guessing that the signal lever is not automatic to return to normal position. I have to turn it back to neutral after I make the turn?

The signals should return to center automatically once you have that pivot bolt installed....read that attachment above to see how to set up and troubleshoot the signals...

Hi Frankie,

Should I go ahead and order the two small springs since mine looks so old? I bought the car two years ago and don't want to put back together and the lever don't return to normal. Should I also buy that C shape rod too?

There is a washer on that pivot pin as well. If you don't install it, it will bind and not cancel cleanly. Ask me how I know!!!
It's not shown in the attachment that Frankie posted.... but you'll want that too.

The lock washer is included with the Zip Corvette pivot bolt.

If it wont automatically return or stay centered when you get it back together come back here for more info, I have several articles concerning solutions to those problems.....easy fixes actually...

I only said this because I suspect our boy is overseas and might get a deal on a bundled shipping of those small parts JUST IN CASE...

He can have them on hand if needed, but IN MOST CASES, I'm a fan of leaving original parts in place unless I KNOW there's a problem with them...

I hope this works and shows the video. Watch this video before you do anything. It shows you step by step what you have to do. Yes as others stated you are missing the shoulder bolt and washer

If the gap between the turn signal bell and the steering column hub was excessive the bolt could have escaped the area and be rolling around on the floor, under the seat, or, gone forever...

Interesting video. It did not work for me and here's why; He is correct in that the housing gets to be oval shaped on the horizontal. The problem is; there is oval then there is OVAL. Mine would not tighten down and stop moving even with the cam trimmed, and required a shim behind the back side (left) of the cam. When I reinstalled the steering wheel it looked like crap because the whole assembly was off to the left enough to be very noticeable. The only way to correct this was with a sheet metal shim (I think it was .015 to .020") on the right side of the column. When put together it centered nicely, looked good with the wheel on, and was tight enough to not move when using the turn signal. Problem then was that they did not cancel when the wheel came back to center. Here was the issue; The housing becomes oval but the turn signal assembly/casting stays the same. The little post, that sticks out the back of the assembly and inserts in the hole of the switch, was now rubbing on the left side metal portion of the switch jamming the mechanism just enough to stop reliable cancelling. I had to file off about 1/3 diameter off the left side of that little post casting and now everything works sweet. I found all this out the hard way.
