Code Scan
So I go out to check for codes on my 91 but the scanner does not recognize it's plugged into the OBD1 port. The plug seems to be in tight so I'm a bit lost. Any suggestions as to what the issue may be, like the female connector ports are dirty. I'm old enough that my body can't contort to be able to get a good view under the dash unless I took the driver's seat out so I'm going by feel.

You could also get a Bluetooth adapter or USB cable so that you can do live scanning with your laptop or android phone using something like tunerpro.or aldscan.

When I did have it at the garage getting the oil sensor replaced about a month ago they said they dug out their OBD1 scanner out and was able to look for any issues while they had it. If anyone else is using the scanner I have hopefully they can tell If they have had any similar issues.

Will the scanner connect to your other vehicles. I realize they are probably OBDII, but you need to systematically remove all variables. I would in this order:
1. try to connect it to one of your other vehicles. I would NOT depend on a "it used to" but "ok I tried it and it did" so on to step 2.
2. now you have to find someone with a OBDI and test the unit that way, if so, on to step 3.
if not, maybe the OBDI cable is bad
3. put up a post and see if there is a fellow C4 owner close to you to see if it will connect. if it does, on to 4.
if it doesn't, you probably have a bad OBDI cable
4. start diagnosing the connection issue with your car

If you just want codes, use the paper clip across pins 1 & 2 and count SES flashes.
I recently picked up a used AutoXray off e-bay, it immediately recognized my '88 Vette and recorded live tech data.
