Default Homemade wood ramps-Help please

I've been searching for a picture on the fourms that I saw a week or so ago from someone who built his own ramps that were long and slow so the car can climb up them without. I cant find this picture. After looking at the prices of Race Ramps, I've decided to make my own. Hopefully, this picture can be reposted or sent to me. I even commented on his post. Thanks.

Is the 7.5" of rise you have there enough for oil changes?

My car is lower then the StingRay. I use a pair of stacked 2X10's, same configuration as the top two boards in RMS73's picture, to get the car high enough to get a floor jack under it. Prefer the car raised higher on Jack Stands to service the underside.

I don't know what the requirement is on the C7, but on the C5 the ramps should have no more than a 17 degree incline. That works out to 3.25 inches of length for every inch of height you want to raise it, not counting the flat area at the top of the ramp. So if you wanted to raise the car 6 inches off the ground in order to get a jack under it, the ramps would need to be 19.5 inches long plus whatever flat area you wanted to add. Say you add a foot of level area at the end of the ramp, the ramp would need to be roughly 30 inches long overall.

Using the measurement method on the Race Ramp site. A 36" straight edge touching the tire then raising the end up until it touches the lower skirt and taking a measurement from the end of the 36" straight edge to the ground, I am getting right it 5 3/4". I am wanting a 10" rise. I wish I would have remembered more geometry from school.

I'll just have to figure how long to make the ramp slope by trial and error.

These are mine - three 2"x10"'s glued together and cut at shallow angle with a band saw, with a stop added on the back end. 4.5" high and about 30" long. High enough for oil changes, even for someone a little bulkier than average.

Goodness at the wood floor. You keep the C7 in the bedroom?

Changing oil in the Vette is easy using both sets of the wooden ramps. The first set of ramps I use for all my other vehicles to do the oil change.

Built ramps for my C6. However one would inevitably move when driving up. Had to ask the wife to watch! I like to work on my own and not worry who is around to help! Gave them away to someone who was changing oil on grass!

My method for the 2014 Z51 and now my Grand Sport has the Vette level to get all oil to drain. I made wood stanchions I place under the back wheels then put the front crossmember on Jack stands. The stanchions weight about 8 lbs each and cost ~$10.

Use sin A = opposite side/hypotenuse = 5.75/36 = 0.1597 = 0.16 = 9 degrees, roughly.
So, tan of 9 deg = 0.158 = opposite over adjacent = 0.158 = 10/x
So 10/0.158 = x = 63 inches

You need a ramp 63 inches long to get a rise of 10 inches, not counting the level portion at the end of the ramp.

All it takes to change the oil on my stock-height C7 is to run the front up 6" (4 2-bys) on an appropriately sloping driveway to make the pan level so the oil will drain correctly. Of course, I'm not obese, but still...

That is a pretty short top platform.

Here is a link to an article by Mike Mercury on building a set of ramps.

Great thread. Was wanting some "go by" pics. I just need some "low ramps" to make it easier to get a jack under my Z06.

Yep, I'm not fat. I'm bulky. Thanks for reminding me.

Might want to consider Race Ramps as an alternative. Light weight, non-skid, I have the 56" Ramps with Extenders. By themselves the 56" Ramps have a 10.8 degree approach angle. With the extenders, that is reduced to 6.6 degrees. Not cheap but worth it compared to all other ramps I have ever used) Makes it very easy and safe to "get it up." Here is my car up on the ramps.
