Default Road Trip to Key West

I am planning a road trip to Key West. Anyone have recommendations for Inn's or B and B's for the trip. I saw a review for such a trip a while back, but can't find it.

Do you want to stay in Key West
(expensive) or a bit north? There is a great hotel we enjoy there.

But, Taveniere is nearby and fairly laid back with reasonable lodging and quaint eateries

The Gardens Hotel 526 Angela St in Key West.
Tucked out of the way, beautiful and gives you a feel for how things were back in the days of Earnest Hemingway and you have to eat at Crabby Dick’s at least once. Sit upstairs and watch the show as the tourists stroll by and enjoy some fresh grouper!

That hotel has secluded parking but you can rent a scooter and have a ball and park it anywhere. Don’t remember if you need a motorcycle license though.

But be forewarned, there are lots of “alternate lifestyle” types there if that bothers you.

We stayed at the Duval House (B&B) during a 6 week motorcycle honeymoon trip in 2010. Very clean and hospitable then.

We stayed at an old cigar-rolling shack converted into a cottage for two nights. Back in '04. Very secluded and romantic. Also, it was on a quiet side street. Quiet is hard to find in Key West! Ditto on Crabby Dicks....excellent food and a ringside seat. At other places, great Cuban sandwiches and Key Lime pie on a stick! Great place to visit, despite the fat old guys on loud Harleys. We like FLA better than Hawaii, personally. Much more interesting, and much better food.

I have been going there every year since my mid 20's to the Offshore boat races in November, and one of the things to consider is parking, which is very limited in Key West. There are a few places that have small parking structures, on the high end $800 night there is Ocean key or Pier House. The more normal price places are $400 night like The Marquessa or Truman House 330/night, all 4 of them have secure parking structures. Be sure to ask about parking structures!!!!! Marquesa has 2 locations, and only 1 of them has a parking structure.

The best spots to stay in my opinion are places close to sloppy Joe's, which is on that west end of Duvall street. It's nearly impossible to park anywhere, so you will be walking everywhere, be sure to bring good shoes. Everything is centered around Duvall, that's why I say to stay as close to it as you can, and closer to the west end of it. Hogs Breath does have "some" parking & if there are spots its $25 and there are not many spots. If you want a quiet, not in the middle of everything kind of place, stay on the east side of the island, but I dont know of any safe secure parking on that side of the island. A must is to go to get the lobster eggs Benedict at Blue Heaven!!

The drive down is all 35-45mph zones, with speed traps everywhere, lots of stop and go, very scenic though with lots of areas to pull off and take pics.

Crabby Dick's is a restaurant and not a health condition BTW...

There is another restaurant (can't remember the name) off the beaten path where you dine outdoors in a pleasant shady area - parrots and chickens wander about freely all over the place...good food. Ask anybody down there and they'll know the place for sure..

If you feel adventurous visit the cabaret show at LaTeDa....its pretty amazing...And that's all I'm going to say about that

We were just there two weeks ago.

Caroline’s on Duvall street is a good place to eat. It’s much like FtFs unnamed description above.

We stay at the Weather Station Inn - parking is included and you walk to everything from there (its located in the old army annex)

Also get to the No Name Pub around marathon key

Blue heaven is a must and is a easy walk down the street

Phil

I just looked it up....small world. That's the place we had Cuban sandwiches and conch fritters, all the while roosters and chickens were wandering around. Excellent food and atmosphere!

Yup - all those and a huge bowl of freshly cooked shrimp! We ate way too much, and enjoyed every minute of it.

The Casa Marina Resort is beautiful and the food is great. Keep in mind that it's always windy in Key West especially in the winter. Duvall Street is a fun place to walk. You'll see everything you can imagine there. Have a great trip.

It's been a few years ('07) but we stayed at the El Patio motel for a few nights. Was part of a much bigger drive where we'd already spent a week at a resort, so we were mostly just looking for a motel we felt confident about safety for us and our '65. Inexpensive, charming '50s decor yet the room was meticulously clean and fresh. Though we did have the pool all to ourselves each morning, we tend not to stay much at the hotel anyway so it was perfect.

You mean here??? Waiter Brent gave me his personal phone #...told me to call him 'if I got in trouble'

I made the road trip from Massachusetts, If you are coming from far enough

North, traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway is as beautiful as the drive from Miami south. We stayed at Southernmost on the beach. beautiful. Have fun!!

If you are not going for a few weeks, check out Bloodline on Netflix. it was filmed in the Keys and will add some flavor to your trip. Jerry

Have a meal here at the HogFish Bar (close by on Stock Island) http://www.hogfishbar.com/

and on your way to or from at MM20 - Mangrove Mama's http://www.mangrovemamas20.com/

Both great places to get a great casual meal in a real key setting.

If you do the sunset dinner cruise you’ll get to see Paris Hilton and Madonna’s houses. Empty and forlorn when I saw them.
