Opinion: Service Dept damaged my new Corvette
My experience with my 500 mile service, the oil change was performed quickly, the customer service from the service writer was great however, they chipped my hood with a tool that was left in the engine bay.
Am I being reasonable to ask for a new hood instead of a scratch and dent repair?

First of all, I know how you feel, it would enrage me that they did this to my car. How it happened is pretty baffling really if they were just changing the freaking oil.
But having said that, there is no way they're gonna replace the entire hood for a paint chip like this. A good dealership might go as far as offering to repaint the entire hood. If it was me, I'd touch up paint the area and not go to this dealership again. I'd rather keep the factory paint job and have a bit of touch up paint in a hard to see area on the edge than risk letting any dealership repaint the hood.
Also, not to nitpick but the hood is not metal. And if you try to pursue this legally, you will lose. It sucks that this happened to you but now you should look for the least painful way to move past this.

First I wouldn't ever leave it with them again. I'd just touch it up and move on. Maybe try to get your money back for the oil change. Pretty stupid move on the mechanic's part. What did he use a vice grip to close it?

Probably had the wiper blades up, away from the glass and opened the hood and hit the blades.
They can fix it and you'll never see it. There is no metal in the carbon fiber hood at that spot.

Probably had a tool in his hand when he closed it.

Metallic paint? I'd touch it up and move on. If you are making payments on it tell them you want a payment or two paix if not you want some accessories. Way more than the paint chip is worth and wont really cost then anything. A new hood is a ridiculous ask btw, why stop there? Ask for a new c8

Agree with others touch it up and move on.
There will be plenty of other issues for you to deal with down the road. It's just a car.

I could make that chip by flicking my fingernail on the ridge.
Touch it up and done.
Once you drive on a highway, you have bigger chips than that.
Stop being so uptight is my advice to you, or dump the car because you'll never be happy.
This I can sense.. There have been many guys who opted out of their car because they "stressed" over it too much.
To me this sounds like you...

Yes you are being totally unreasonable in asking for a new hood. Repair the chip and move on.

Its not just unreasonable, its both unreasonable and foolish wanting a new hood. Don't open that can of worms. The first thing that will happen is something else will get chipped when they remove or install the new hood, or even worse, when they try and close it the first time before its properly adjusted. Don't do it, you will be sorry.

Agree.
I understand its a brand new car. But because the damage in on the edge an none of it on the upper surface, its an easy fix to do yourself and no one will notice when you are done. Wet sand the area, then touch it up carefuly in layers.
Get some compensation from the dealer, of course. A free touch up bottle, etc. Don't over play it. If they think you are a nut job fanatical lint licker who will never buy a car or have your car serviced from them, why would they give you any satisfaction?

You should be upset and consider not returning to the dealership but why would you want to risk other damage to the car (if by chance if they would ever agree) by replacing the hood. Also the chance of the paint not matching and other issues. I agree with the others here, have them fix it and you will not notice it any more and drive off and enjoy your car.

Thanks for your replies! Of course this was written when it happened and I was pretty pissed off. After reading the posts and sleeping on it I see what you guys are saying. Oh and I know the hood was carbon fiber, it was more to explain that it was not a scratch or a minor chip. Appreciate the candid remarks and repairing the chip is the best way forward.

A new hood? You should be demanding a new car! Actually, I agree with one of the above posters. Trade it. The car will never be perfect again.

Put touch up paint on the chip and worry about things that are worth getting upset over. I never understand why people would rather have a new hood, that will have to be painted at a body shop, probably wont be a perfect match/finish to the rest of the car, probably will have a fisheye or 2, a dirt spec or 2, a paint run or 2. OR you can just touch up that tiny little paint chip that NO ONE WILL EVER SEE.
