Is it better to pump old gas out and burn it in the lawn mower or treat it with what? Fuel Injector cleaner ,Stal bil . Royal purple . What really works?

How old are we talking? I've cut old gas with super many times and ran out the tank in cars no problems. The old gas is usually worse on carbs anyway.

I'd say it depends how old that gas is to be sure, but if you think its too old then get it out of there.

How much of the old gas is left in the tank? Not too bad of a job to get the old gas out. You can remove the fuel pump assembly to siphon the old gas out, then replace the "sock" on the pickup tube. Put the pump back in and replace the fuel filter. .Fill the tank with premium grade and add a bottle of Techron. Then run that tank until its empty. Fill up and add another bottle of Techron.

When I purchased my 91 last October it had half a tank of gas, but when run it started and ran fine. Seller did tell me the gas in there was pretty old, but since it still ran decent all I did was fill it with premium and that worked fine. If it ran like crap when I went to see it I would have been more concerned because no telling if it was just old gas or an actual engine issue. As Tom400CFI says, it is difficult without having more info.

old gas
What is considered old gas? The smell, the color . I thought Napa had test strips that would change color. Does it have to be slimy when placed in a clear gas jar?

If it smells like trumpet valve cleaner...it's "old gas". Even smelling like that, it CAN still work "fine"....but you'd be justified in calling it "old".

I've run what could only be described as varnish through motors... disconnect the fuel filter and jump the relay and drain it that way into a can of you want to make it easier. If you can throw 10 gallons on top of it that's what I'd do.

The lower "1/2" of the tank isn't isolated from the "upper 1/2"....they mix. So yeah, you've burned all that gas up, a long time ago.
