I am old and don't race . . . but I'd like a more aggressive sound than the stock exhaust. Why is the Borla axle back more than $1,000 and is it worth it?

Had every exhaust system under the sun. For you, get a Corsa or Magnaflow. Not too loud, and no resonance.

I had the SLP Loudmouth when my engine was still fairly stock and loved the "straight pipe" sound with long tubes. After moving to a 402 stroker, with the long tube headers the drone was unbearable for a daily driver @ around 1,500 RPM when cruising. I actually went with the Borla ATAK axle-back and it helped tremendously with that overbearing drone. I was originally going to go with the Corsa Xtreme, but after hearing a Camaro with similar setup that had the Corsa, that was not the sound I was after. I have liked the sound of the Borla ATAK, but I will admit I do miss the Loudmouth as far as the sound it put out, I just wish I could keep the drone from ruining it when cruising.

Had a Corsa sport on my last Corvette and I wouldn't say it had growl. It had a great sound and I loved it. My current Vette has headers and Borla stingers and I would say it growls.

Had Magnaflow on my '05 and it was really good and did not drone under normal day to day driving but did on long inclines like the Grapevine in Southern California while running a constant speed. Down or up shifting would stop the drone until getting back to that consistent speed/RPM. Otherwise it was fine.

That is by definition drone..In fact that is the perfectdefinition of it. OP, the Corsa will not do that at any RPM...
You're gonna pay 1600 for a good axle back now days....At least with Corsa you get very nice tips along with nice sound and decel gurgles to make you get wood...Borla has great sound too and no drone if you get the right one but the tips are rolled and disappointing (to me as I've owned had them as well)....price is very close to each other..
Edit for Magnaflow sounds good too and is the easiest to install as the tips bolt on separate but they are rolled as well...They do have the drone at 1800 to 2000 rpm though it is mild. Ask me how I know.
good luck

Just an idea, pick up a used NPP exhaust and put the mild to wild switch on it. Best of both worlds, quiet when you want and aggressive when you want. I usually see them for $2-300 online used. I personally leave mine open all the time except when on the interstate for long distances.

I too sometimes wish for a growl on my '05.
For the OP, your answer is to change the mufflers = $xxx
But, do a search and try the muffler mod = $free
(Drill holes and cap the holes...no welding...seems easy)
(You can even experiment with hole size...start with 1 inch increase to 1.5 inch etc.)
If you don't like the muff mod, buy mufflers.
Let us know what you think of the mod and/ or mufflers you choose.
Good luck.

There was a thread a couple weeks ago about the Hooker Blackheart exhaust. Price was good as were the reviews.
I currently have Kooks headers and uncatted xpipe with the Corsa Sport. I'm looking to change to something with more of a growl and add cats.

I have the SLP Loudmouth on my GS. Sounds great, has an amazing burble when downshifting, but also has a very obnoxious drone between1500 and 2300 RPM when pulling. Love the sound on the outside. Not so much inside the car.

Anyone know the sound difference between the Loudmouth vs Loudmouth 2? Is the BB Bullet about the same sound
as the SLP's? I have NPP with the fuse pulled, just not enough for me
