Default Lowball CarMax offer - ya think?

CarMax has a vert Z06 I have my eyes on. Went thru the appraisal on my vert 2014 M7 3LT NRB black top with under 27k miles. Great condition with Brownstone interior, Z06 wheels and sport seats.

They offered $36k...

KBB has it around $41k. Looks like no Z06 for me just now...

Use KBB's cash offer to speculate your value (not their trade in value). It will give you a better idea.

I find car max as buyer of last resort. They prey on people that HAVE TO SELL.. if you have a clean title (no lien) selling private party is probably your best bet. The 7 day price guarantee from CAR MAX does not come without a catch. Of the 6 vehicles (non corvettes) that i have sold car max was much lower than where they ended up selling private party. At least you have your worst case scenario.

Best of Luck

Agreed. I miss the old days when they used KBB (before they had their own system). When that was the case, Corvettes were a GREAT sell at CarMax. No more unfortunately!

It's a dealer, do you think they're gonna give you even close to what you want?

Sell it privately for a cpl grand more.

Hit or miss experiences with offers at car max. Sold my 09 Ram for mwah more than I was offered elsewhere with 90k miles on it. Offers on my other cars were either way low (sports cars) or slightly lower.

That's a decent offer. Take it and save on the tax. I traded in a Stingray to them to get my Z06. Very happy with the deal.

Yep ..they are in business to make a profit so they are at the apex of horse\car trading. Try Carvana or another dealer and you will get a similar offer.A private sale might get you 2 or 3 k more but you gotta be patient, pay to advertise and field all calls and you still might not sell.

Ask yourself this:
  • How bad do you want the Z?
  • would a Chevy dealer give you more on trade if you were buying new?

Good luck on selling your ride. It looks like you may have to put more down on that Z and/or take a loss on the trade.

I believe it depends on the Carmax market you are dealing in as I've always been presently surprised with my offers from Carmax locally, but have friends in other parts of the country who have been low-balled.

$36K isn't that bad actually considering you can have check in hand in about 30-45 minutes in most cases and don't have to deal with all the annoying tire-kickers and pretend C7 buyers.

Sounds like a fair offer...your car is 40ish retail and Carmax doesn’t work for free. What were you expecting? Few grand put the brakes on getting in a Z?

They offered me $41,500 for my 17 Z51 M7 white/Adrenaline red with 23k miles. Not too bad I guess.

Pretty weird how some threads say carmax is great and some others say they are crooks. They resell so you have to pay their profit. Simple. Just like any dealer. Plus it's a 14 with 27k miles.

considering the c7 market is tanking as we speak, i think their offer is fair.

Keep in mind, carmax has a database that cross references what all their buyers at all of their stores are looking for.

If you dont get the most for your trade at carmax, you are probably being tricked by another dealer who knows how to move numbers around... aka, show more for your trade by taking that profit out of the car you are buying.

KBB is nonsense. Manheim auction report is your real number.... aka NADA blackbook.

Does your car need new tires? theres 2 grand. Wheels scaped? scratches? do you smoke? All of these things deduct value.

Private party will always be the highest value... but its a hassle and you just lost your tax savings in 40 out of 50 states selling privately instead of dealing with dealership.

8% tax on 36 grand is almost 3 grand alone. So you are really getting 39 grand for your trade by trading in on a car that you like at a dealer.

new AND used car deals on c7z's are going to be stupid in 4 months. Prices will fall further for sure, especially with all the instability in USA politics, and Venezuela/china/russia/turkey, and oil prices skyrocketing, and not coming back down anytime soon. A war will be started to take gas prices on up... and the economy will tank relative to where it is right now, everything becomes more expensive when gas goes up, except for cars with big engines.

They're still trying to burn the hell out of you. I have about the same mileage 1lt coupe in my area, and I have had bites all day long at 36k. That is a coupe car. While Cali has more competition, I would aim for trying to get 40k for the car. Depending on your area, if the dealer offers 39 and you have the double tax law, youd be making the same as private sale. Good luck.

you may have had offers at 36g 2 weeks ago.. GM iced the market in all of their infinite wisdom, by announcing the announcement date of the c8.

(as if the c8 wont be sold out first year regardless what they do, c7 sales are dead now because of what GM did 2 weeks ago)

Go shop your cars as of this week, everything fell in price, dealers across the country are heavy in c7's, new and used, and they know it.

Carmax is wise to only offer 36, the price will keep falling in the months to come.

Double edged sword, you will save a lot more on the next car you buy, than the amount you lose on your trade.

When I sold my 2007 convertible in 2015 I used one of the dealer bidding sites and got several bids from 22000- 24500. I ended up taking 24500 for it but on my way to sell it to that dealer, I passed a CarMax so I thought, WTH, I may as well get a price from them. They offered 18K.

Only in the minds of Corvette owners is a 55% of MSRP ($65k for OP's car when new) trade in offer for a 6 model year old, completely out of warranty, mass produced car a "low ball" offer.
