Tech1a with all required cartridges would be the better choice because diagnostic charts are intended to be used with it. Downside It's of little use after 97 model year.
Tech2 not intended for anything but powertrain on a C4. Tech2 came out in 97 after C4 was out of production.

There is a Tech 1 for sale but I am not sure what cartridges I need. Has a bunch including the GM mass storage one. Not sure what else is needed. I read somewhere there is also one for the GM power train but I did not see that one listed. What is the difference between 1 and 1a?

I use a Tech 2 clone quite successfully with my 1992 Corvette for many functions. I even link it with a Windows XP virtual machine with a serial cable for additional functionality. Here is more information on some testing I did.

i currently have an app the blue tooth’s into a device that plugs into the OBD | port and reads lots of parameters including knock counts etc but is limited regarding codes. I have been using the paper clip method to get codes from the ECM and BCM. Not sure if the Tech 1 will give me more than that? And still the million dollar question aren’t what cartridges are needed for the Tech 1.

Tech1a was updated version; tech1 is still good. Mass storage cartridge does powertrain, some abs, programming. There is are CCM.programming, abs/asr, body systems sir. Granted 90% of troubles are powertrain and abs so msc and abs cartridges cover most problems. MSC menu will very depending on platform.
