Appearance of rear J55/Z51 rotors
Hello. Has anyone found a way to keep the unswept area of the rear J55 rotors looking ok? With the pad covering only about 1/2 the rotor, it just doesn't look very nice and any rust will never be removed by pad.

Not hard to pull the rotors, and paint coat them for all the areas that the pads will not contact to keep the rust at bay.

If a road coarse car, then use high temp paint, but for a just a street driving car, standard enamel spray paint will hold up instead.

There is several things that you can do. The easiest is to paint the unswept area with a ceramic brake caliper paint like Duplicolor or VHT. The best way to paint them is to remove the rotor, throughly clean the rotors and paint off the car getting good coverage in the cooling vanes. Just tape off the swept area and spray away. The next option is to have them powder coated with is extremely durable and like the paint option the rotors will have to be removed. the next option is to have them zink plated similar to chrome plating but much softer and cheaper. The link will wear away on the swept area of the rotor. Given the options paint is a really good and inexpensive way to go and will last.

Just drive the car and enjoy it. A lot more fun than concerning yourself with “appearance” of a brake rotor. Wash the car when it gets dirty. Life can be so simple.

It takes maybe an hour plus drying time to do it right, once. And they do look like **** if they're not done.

Thanks for all the positive responses and I like the painting idea. I should have asked before I installed the new rotors last week but oh well. I left the anti corrosion coating on the unswept area and will see how bad that looks after the next track day. I like to drive it very hard but also to look good at the same time.

Just finished 28 days on the road covering 8,000 miles coast to coast to coast with offshoots in between. All I ever heard from anyone was “nice car”.

Since the OP has new rotors, now would be the time to zinc plate them. It'd handle 800 F. without problems and always look good. Just use old pads for the first few stops until the zinc wears of the swept area. That'll eliminate the time needed to wear off the contamination.

I am interested to see what you do and what they look like once they get 'roaded in'.
Please post pix.
I have some DBA 5000 two piece rotors for the front. I haven't decided what I will do for the rears.

I presume "you" in a thread to be the OP. I am hoping he will do something cool with his rotors and post pix.
