Default Only true way to shut down V4 mode

My friend who is a technician told me that they're currently rebuilding a 2016 Denali engine due to V4 mode oil shutdown. He told me that the range device and any tuning is only a temporary Band-Aid fix to truly shut down the V4 mode. Is this true? What do you guys think?

He said they're adding this kit in the rebuild, and spoke to Texas Speed about the Denali engine rebuild.

The tune turns it off and that kit removes the afm/dod lifters which have had some failures and replaces them with non afm/dod lifters which are said to be better and plugs the oil paths. So the tune truly shuts down v4 mode but doesn't eliminate the remaining failure points which is where this kit would come into play.

So I guess you could still get an engine failure without this kit even with a tuned out V4

Using the Range AFM Disabler on my '14, and now the '16. With an A8, and most driving in touring, with an x-pipe and NPP fuse pulled, couldn't stand the fart pipe sound in 4 cylinder mode.

The AFM lifters are the problem, not running in V4 or keeping it in sport doesn't change the AFM/DoD lifters to something better. It's a hardware issue not a software issue.

The A8 Corvettes will enter into V4 mode in any setting unless manual shifting is selected.. M6 cars will only go into V4 mode in ECO setting. If I remember correctly...

Callaway does tune out the V4 mode.

Exactly! When my car was new I pulled the fuse to see how it sounded with the valves open all the time. Sounded fantastic until it went into V4 mode and had the wonderful note of a farting tractor.

The whole thread is about the range device or a tune doesn't really knock out the AFM/DOD

You can get an engine failure anytime, with or without this kit. Engines fail.......

That is true. I think the idea was that if you are already going into the motor or rebuilding the bottom end, getting rid of the AFM/DOD lifters would be smart money and then you can replace them with a Morel or similar quality traditional hydraulic roller lifter.

Truth of the matter if you had the data, I doubt any hydraulic lifter by any manufacture even the after market is any more reliable than the GM AFM lifters.
All hydraulic lifters operate on the same principle and they all have a statistical failure rate because they depend on good clean oil flow and metering. Problem is I haven't known any producer of hydraulic lifters OEM or otherwise willing to share their failure rate publicly.

I lost a C4 LT1 engine in Germany back in the day. We thought it was a lifter it was actually a weak valve spring.
I had a friend lose a mustang 5.0 engine. Everyone blamed the lifters until they found contamination in the oil filter.
Point is a lot valve train failures (especially in GM small blocks) get lumped in with lifter failures.

That being said I am sure some are better than others but how would we know?
Solid lifters or derivatives are another story altogether.
