Default The C8 may decimate the high end used sports car market

Currently I'm in a GT350 and starting to look. Past cars included 3 vettes, 981, 987. I like to buy used, and I've been tracking R8, NSX, 911, Evora 400, GTR prices pretty closely. I'm excited to see if the new platform undercuts these cars and drives them down.

Who will buy a 10 year old R8 if you could get a '20 mid engine C8, the newest tech, for cheaper and with a warranty?

And what will happen to the value of:
2017 NSX @ $120k and falling
991 911 @ $70k
2018 Evora 400 @ $80k

I think the mid engine platform @ a cheaper entry point (outside of the 4cyl cayman) is a big deal.

C8 will have no impact on used supercar market. The C7 Z06 already outperforms many of them so a new generation will not change anything.

Supercar market...you are probably right, but the cars he is mentioning aren't technically supercars by some peoples definitions. I could see what the OP is stating as being true for certain cars such as used R8's, Evoras, 911's (not GTs), and the GT-R as taking a hit to their value in the short term due to the upcoming availability of a mid engine Corvette in the same price point. None of those cars listed have a particular collectors following so their value is reliant on what is currently available on the market.

You do however bring up a point about the C7 not having a big impact on used supercar prices, and I have to go out on a limb and say it may have had something to do with the big to do about overheating and limp mode horror stories. I think that if the Z06 had come out and was bullet-proof it would have stood a better chance at shaking up the sports car market. Instead the Z06 has the worst residual value of all the C7's in the used car market which just amazes me.

Regardless, whatever happens, it will be interesting to see how the sports car world handles it. People think that this is just another Corvette, but it is offering something that has been the realm of supercars for so long that it is hard to believe it won't be felt by the likes of the exotic manufacturers. I mean, Ferrari is coming out with a hybrid mid engine supercar with over 1000hp that is supposed to eventually become the company's replacement for the F8. 1000 horsepower for the entry level mid engine Ferrari, that seems a bit overkill, but it may have something to do with the fact that GM has already changed what is expected for the money in those 1 percenter circles.

The C8 will absolutely have a HUGE impact on car sales. It will decimate Mustang GT sales and Dodge Demon sales.
Doubt it will influence Lambo or Ferrari sales. Porsche sales will probably feel a little tug, same for Maserati. My opinion.

After a couple years there will be mid engine vetts everywhere, there will still be relatively few nsx, r8, 458s running around. People will pay for exclusivity.

+1.

And to the OP..... "Decimate" is a very high expectation for the C8 to deliver.

But..... time will certainly tell.

I've not seen any Corvette change the buying habits of those that normally shop the "high priced spread". The C7 attracted a number of back to ownership with it's "exotic" looks, features and performance. I'm sure the C8 will do the same for those wanting a ME car, but do not have the deep pockets to afford the normal players.

Actually it's not a high expectation at all. The term means "to reduce by ten percent." It has its origin in a practice of ancient armies, Romans in particular. When the soldiers were showing reluctance to engage the enemy, the commanders would execute 1 in 10 to motivate the others. Admittedly, in modern parlance the word is often used to mean "cause huge damage to", but that is not its origin or actual meaning.

It will be interesting to see if any impact happens to the cars you mentioned, I think Porsche will be fine while the others are already seeing loses even before the C8 hits dealers lots.

The C8 could affect the Boxster/Cayman sales, but little to no impact on 911 sales.

Te C8 will not affect 911 pricing. Very, very few car buyers cross shop Corvettes and 911s. I highly doubt that engine placement will change that.

You do realize the Demon is the fastest straight line production car, right? Not fastest for the price, fastest. Period. You can't run it stock at a drag strip, because it runs fast enough to require a full cage. People buy them for completely different reasons than Vettes.

No, the C8 isn't touching the Demon market. And, I'd argue the Mustang market (barring a few one-offs and special models) is already below the Vette market by substantial numbers.

The proven repeat new Corvette buyer will always warm up to the next C-Generation. They'll buy one during its production run, provided they can afford one. Those that can't come up with the money won't. But they'll wish they could. ....

I believe the OP is correct and it will drive prices down of other used vehicles which are out of warranty.

I know a lot of current Mclaren and Porsche owners who are sick of large service bills, and are eying the c8 very closely, who ask me what I know about the car on a regular basis.

Our Porsche sales manager has also made mention that he believes the c8 will have an impact on 911 sales, since the c8 will be the latest and greatest and it will allow a lot of high end clientele to jump into a Vette and save face that it is now an "exotic" car, at least for the first year or 2 before everyone has one, and then they might go back to Porsche Mclaren ferrari Lambo once they give the Vette a fair shot while it is still a rare vehicle and is still a conversation piece when they pull up to parties and events.

Most rich people don't become rich by spending their money foolishly. The c8 presents an opportunity in its first 2 years of production for these clients to be in a rare unique car, while also being very practical financially.

I started the thread because it's the problem that I'm facing. Every time I look at the R8, NSX, Evora, etc I think why would I spend more for an older car, when this new C8 "may" be better. If it is, I think it's going to affect the used market in the $100k range.

Another interesting paradigm is C7 Z06 pricing come August (more so than usual when the new gen comes out because of the new platform). If the new base/Z51 model hits it out of the park, Z's will free fall to the $50's. IMHO
