Default Water Pump Belt

I'm trying to install the belt that goes from the water pump pulley to the crankshaft pulley on my non-AC '67 big block. I read on the forum where it was suggested to cut off the head of one of the bolts that threads into the water pump hub and use this stud as a guide to slide the pump pulley onto the hub. Apparently Quanta makes two versions of this belt...Part #B-084A (which they call the "long version") and Part #B-084B (which they call the "short version"). Frankly, I don't know when you'd use one over the other since, as far as I know, the pulley size and the distance between the centers of the crankshaft and waterpump is the same for all 427 engines. Anyway, I ended up buying both the belts. For the life of me I can't quite get the shorter belt to fit. I was able to get the longer belt on but there's about a 1/2" deflection on the belt. It's a little looser than I would have expected. So I guess my question is has anyone else ran into this? I'm very hesitant to try and force on the shorter belt as I don't want to take a chance on damaging the water pump bearings. Any advice would be appreciated.

The longer one is for repro pulleys. Take a medium Phillips screwdriver and put the end though the pulley bolt hole and walk it into the w/p hub

I replaced that belt on my '67 427 (i believe it was the original belt) a couple years ago. I found it easier to remove and use the crank pulley as the loose component rather than the upper water pump pulley. I couldn't get the water pump to not spin slightly given the tension of the belt while trying to get it on the pump shaft - which made aligning the bolts a challenge. The lower pulley doesn't need the same amount of angle to get it properly remounted and the crank won't spin on its own.

How do I know if my pulley is original or not? It does have a stamping on the face of the pulley which says 3906656 CV which I believe to be the correct stamping number. Did they make aftermarket pulleys that had this stamping?

I don't have a lot of experience but had the same issue. I made a couple of very short all threads and got one in, then walked the H2O pump pulley in place and installed the other one. From that point you can install two bolts, back out the all threads and install the remaining bolts. The all threads have to be short as if they are not short enough they will not come out as they will hit the fan clutch. Quanta sells two belts for this as one is slightly larger to help with this issue. I got the smaller one and installed using the above method. (1966 L72) Good luck, cheers. Mark
