I have a 2024 C8 coming in soon to replace my 2023 on a buyback deal. I now use the onboard nav frequently but am very confused about the functionality of the new Google based system. The manual is not clear, and I'm reading a lot of conflicting posts. So, without a paid Google subscription, will the C8 nav function? If it requires another monthly fee, I can simply use CarPlay as my default navigation. Hard to believe GM would offer a premier line with a system that requires a subscription service for a simple built-in navigation system.
For those who have a 2024 C8, does your nav work on its own … without a paid Google subscription?
Nope. If you don’t wanna pay for an OnStar data plan, you have 2 other options. Use your phone as a wifi hotspot, or just use CarPlay/Android Auto. I use CarPlay…

it requires an Onstar subscription for Google maps based NAV system to work
Sucks doesn't it? My previous C6 and C7 had the built-in NAV system. Nice
I will not pay a subscription!!! You can you Android-Auto which will show Google maps from your phone.
Or you can use WAZE and Android Auto. Screw Google.
GM this pisses me off!!
I was hoping that wasn’t the case, but I guess it is. My 2023, of course, dealt with built-in navigation like any other car … it just works, with a charge for updates after a certain period of time. The ads say navigation is now available with a Google or OnStar subscription, but no longer say navigation is a standard feature. I guess this means that navigation is no longer included as a standard accessory for the C8 … basically offering less than the previous model year. This is like a one pound food package now weighing 14 ounces, and at the same or higher price.
Pretty sure, for me, CarPlay will now be my standard navigation choice. I really don’t get how GM thought eliminating standard nav from their “supercar” is in any way a good idea. It may generate some more subscribers, but at the cost of really upsetting a lot of very loyal customers.
I don't know if you will get nagged about it, but other '24 owners have said they just completely skipped everything related to onstar, no initial setup, nothing.
If I could go back, I would just do that from day 1. It'll save you the hassle of having to cancel before the "free" month trial runs out. There's no point in bothering with any of it if you have no intention of paying for a sub.

It requires a DATA connection. But apparently it doesn't have to be through OnStar. People have said that using your phone as a hotspot allows it to work.
But be aware that some phone plans charge for using the phone as a hotspot, and some don't allow it at all.
I am usually not fond of any OEM navigation. Even though I have the Nav on all my vehicles, I use a Garmin GPS on the dash especailly driving thru State highways or small towns because the Garmin SmartDrive GPS will make audible tones when speed limit changes -- helps not getting into a speed trap. Also the Garmin GPS has the life time free map update.

Just drove 1200 miles after picking up my Stingray yesterday morning. I had no idea I was gonna see all the Google stuff on the infotainment screen. I ignored it all as I use Carplay. Worked great. Until....like 20mins before I get home I see that the car says the speedlimit (dash and hud) is 70mph in a neighborhood. Sat in the car for like an hour trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Eventually found what I was the built-in Google maps stuck like 300 miles from my house saying it couldn't get a GPS signal or something. Found the Google stuff and turned it all off and problem solved. I was kind of worried there for a while.

Do you remember what sub-menu you found the Google stuff to turned it off?
Maybe I'm not seeing everything all others are seeing. I have a 24...it's a 1LT, but when the trial expired, I just turned on my phones Hot Spot and moved on. I also use a Solis device when I don't want to use my phone when traveling.
I did a factory reset of my head unit after the trial because my Hot Spot and Wi-Fi Network icons were grayed out afterwards. That reset gave me a fresh start.
Never seen any "built-in" nav unit that came anywhere near current map sets on Google, Waze or other 3rd party apps. OEM simply could not keep up...and paying for those DVDs got old really fast.

How did you do the factory reset, and did it stop the pop-ups?

images out of order. Settings, Vehicle, Show all apps, then disable the Google stuff. I turned off the Alexa garbage too. There are apps in that I wonder what they do. Inquiring minds want to know.

unbelievably poor of Gm. It’s not Google it’s GM. I have a 2024 Volvo with exact same Google system and free for 4 years. You can’t even control radio or climate without paying yet in Volvo you can virtually control every function in the car by voice via Google. Guess GM doesn’t care about safety only lining their pockets. Guess they forgot who bailed them out when they were in trouble. Shame shame shame on GM!
