It Was On This Date In Chevrolet History...
That '76 Corvette #32597 rolled off the assembly line in St. Louis and it would be one week later on May 6th that I picked up my new Stingray. Which has me thinking...
48 years ago when I took the keys on that Thursday night I was an 18 year old kid with a 16 year old girlfriend and my entire life in front of me.
Now I'm a 66 year old Grandpa with a 14 year old Granddaughter and most of my life is behind.
For years I was never happy with the paint job & dreamed of the day of a respray. Get the seams filled, no more high & low spots. Perfect paint.
Now it's the last thing I want to do. Things like the mar above the nose emblem left by a pheasant I smacked outside Lewis IA. are now battle scars & memories.
Major improvements are history too. I want a preserved time machine now, the same feel, squeaks & sounds of '76. Like Frampton comes alive on the radio...
So happy birthday old Chevy. It's been a great ride. Hopefully in two years & one week from now we'll celebrate our 50th golden anniversary together...
This pic is from '78. The original BFG T/A "G-50's" mounted on polished Cragar slots. This would be the handling high point..
A day by the lake. Maybe that factory paint doesn't look so bad.........from this angle & with those shadows anyway....

Oh, Man!..... That's the flattest Vega wheel I've ever seen!
What did that feel like?

Over steered around a curve in the rain & spun into a pole @ 45-50 mph it was very loud, but she held up pretty good though. The car found the one & only pole / object insight to hit. ( Figures ) Passenger face took out the windshield, my wrist & chest were sore for weeks we were both in pain, but no broken bones. Lucky to live & talk about it.

You were lucky brother...
I've only gone off roading twice, both times in the first year showing friends the handling capabilities of a Corvette.
I learned my lesson & lucky for me it only cost two alignments and one bent rally...

Great story wish I had of been able to buy one at 16.
Unlike you I have only had her for for 12 years now but still get a big grin on my face when she comes out of storage every year.
14 days and Violet turns 50.

Great way to announce your car's birthday. And a nice write up as well.
