I am mounting this front camera in the next week, I’ll post the install with pics here in the section… it’s a Wi-Fi camera that works through your phone. i’m mounted one of these on a Camaro six months ago and it works perfect.
I suppose someone has tried, but I've no idea if all the cars are equipped for doing so. Why not just add separate, independent camera(s) and call it good?

I was really worried about the front camera when I was first shopping for my C8. I ended up getting a 3LT so I have it standard, and its nice to have. But now that I am used to the car, I don't find it to be the game changing option I thought it would be. I do use it, but if I didn't have it I would work around it. I would find a birds eye view camera to be infinitely more useful, but that is not an option... its also very difficult to add that after the fact.
If you already have a 1LT/1LZ, adding some aftermarket camera isn't going to look great. I think some well-placed and well-calibrated audible parking sensors would be just as useful and much easier to seamlessly integrate.

A nice install would be such that you could judge where the bottom of the bumper is in relation to any obstacles. In addition, if it's wifi, is there an android app for it that could work in android auto thus allowing it to show in the car display?
I plan to mount the camera back underneath the front lip so it’s not sticking out, and it will be focused on my front splitter and where it is in relation to a parking ingot. It uses a proprietary android/iPhone app and displays in about 30 seconds after you start the app when the camera is running. Go to Amazon and read all the description on it. throw away the license plate holder. run the power in through the tow eye cover, up behind the grill and back in the front door to the power port underneath the glove box. Use a 12 V cordless switch prior to the power port so you can turn it off and on. However, it will always shut off with the car if you use the power under the glovebox. once I get it mounted and I will make a post on the project by steps.
Not bad for 50 bucks. Make sure you take lots of pictures.
If you have a phone mount and leave wifi on it "should" auto connect to it (or set to) when the car is on. Then all you have to do it tap the app. Is there an easy switched 5v source to connect it too in the fronk?

sure…. you can use a cordless 12 V remote switch connected to a 12v power plug and the frunk port. Disadvantage of using the power port in the frunk is if you forget to turn it off, it’ll still be running when the car is shut down ……using the power port in the glove box area is ignition sensitive. here is the remote 12v switch.
update: so mounting the cam aiming right at the point of the black plastic, which still doesn’t look bad because the cameras so small, here is what it will look like when I get as close to a parking ingot as I want, , the point in black is my splitter. tomorrow, I’ll add more pics here what it looks like on the car

so here is the camera mounted on the passenger side right in front of the point in the splitter, As that’s where you'll hit an ingot first. All the wiring goes in the tow eye cover, up to the frunk area and back along the passenger side to the door, then inside the door and connecting to the power port. A stick wrapping tool pushes the thin wire underneath all the weatherstrip that it encounters perfectly. it’s a total nondestructive mod using two sided tape & 94 adhesion primer, no drills were used or animals harmed in this mod.
I don’t see how you could integrate this to the car, it shows up on your iPhone. So I pull into the parking space, grab my phone bring up the app. It automatically connects and shows me the picture. and I pull forward the commensurate amount. it’s a $50 unit, it’s basic but does the job for me. and it’s tucked back into the left part of the grill, if you look straight down, it doesn’t protrude out at all. I didn’t want it interfering at all with my novistretch.
and as far as pics of a wire routing, none of them really work I took some and you can’t see anything because it’s behind the weatherstripping up in the corner of the windshield. Suffice to say it goes behind the front fender and into the cabin. But I know it works because I replaced a curb Alert wire I had mounted earlier, I don’t want sound. I want picture.
if you are using the GM Wi-Fi internal system in your car, you have to shut that down before it will allow you to connect to the camera Wi-Fi. But I don’t have the GM Wi-Fi in my car so it works perfect.

I have the front cameras too and I found them awkward to use. Yes, it tells you how far you are from an obstacle but it requires a bit of focus to figure out exactly how much space you have, not nearly as intuitive as the backup camera and radar in my opinion. Also after one year of daily driving, this car is still the hardest I ever had to park exactly centered between the lines when going forward, which really offends my OCD. The backup camera is so much more useful (to me) that I tend to park in reverse most of the time now.

Some apps are “CarPlay aware” and will display on the CarPlay screen. Just curious if that app has that option. Most don’t, for some reason, but some do. Like Dunkin Donuts app is CarPlay aware so you can quickly punch up a re-order on the fly. I guess it’s a safely thing??
I thought it would be pretty cool if your phone app to show your front camera would be able to display on the main screen. Still using your phone, but not really much different than me having to push my front camera button to use mine.
Thanks for the explanation on the wiring. I think I can visualize what your doing. Great idea! I was just thinking if there was any concern that the wiring could be cut or damaged by the metal edge under the weatherstripping.
you mentioned that you didn’t want the camera to be affected by the Novistretch. My Novistretch effectively blocks my camera completely. I had an old one that had some fraying so I made some grommet holes in it so the cameras can still work. Does your mount method avoid that problem? Or did you just mean you didn’t want the camera to come in contact with the bra?
yes, I just didn’t want it coming in contact with the bra and possibly abraiding against the bra, abrading against the camera, or changing the camera position under the stress. Obviously doesn’t work at all with the novistretch on the car.. Everything installed, wire running in the door and up to a strip of acrylic that holds the 12 V cordless switch, power plug and connections. Held underneath the dash with 3M dual lock, love this stuff. Added onto the strip at 12 V flashing red LED, so I don’t leave it on when I don’t need it. Everything is on a quick disconnect if I need to take it for service, etc. Here is the proof of concept last picture I will post here, now that I can see it, I can get my splitter within an inch or two of the ingot without touching it!
I’m very interested in this information. brnkuc@aol.com
