I have my car in the shop for clutch and the builder is concerned about the leaking magnetic shocks I have. I know some leakage is normal according to other posts I've seen but how much is too much. What would be acceptable?
Mist in the top one third is ok. You seem to show mist almost half way down. That is not bad in itself considered normal. However if you are seeing streaks or runs of fluid pass one third, that is a leak. I suggest you wipe your shocks once a year and keep an eye on it. Once I bottomed out front shocks and blew them, I know what a leaking shock looks like. You would also feel in suspension if you had bad shocks. I say clean and keep an eye on it. The fluid inside is magnetic and that will capture the mist from the magnetic road debris looking like a leak.
Some of the C6 MR shocks have been discontinued. My guess is anyone with a Z07 and leaking shocks is SOL because they had more aggressive mechanical damping than did the "standard" Z06 MR shock, however Jim Mero can compensate for that with his aftermarket MR calibrations.
I purchased a second set of MR shocks for my car and at the time I did that the rears were discontinued but the rears from a 427 Convertible will fit except for the wiring harness needs to be modified.
The EPC shows only two different Types MRC Shocks for the C6.
Z07 (starts from MY2011) and Z06 with F55 (starts from MY2012) use mechanical the same Shocks like the ZR1. Difference is only the Calibration, Europe Spec Z07 are the only ones with the RPO F92 "Specific Tuning", that is the Calibration which Jim runs on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Year 2011 with a MY2012 Z07.

I’ve that some Audi r8 owners have had some luck with a company out of Poland rebuilding these shocks. I haven’t worked with them and otherwise know nothing about them but it seems to be the only company I’ve read about doing this type of service. https://nagengast.pl/en/about/

It would be cool if there was a way for use to get another run of these things made with the correct valving.
I’m grateful Jim Mero is able to tune the mrc calibration to suit the shocks available.
I agree that given the situation, wipe them down.
I thought one of mine had blown, turned out to not be the case.
